Toenail fungus happens when there is infection in the nails. It usually affects one or more nails and can spread especially if left untreated and if the fungi remain in a conducive environment. Conducive spells warm and moist environment, and it equates to shower floors or sweaty feet.
Toenail fungal infection is prevalent in adults, affecting about 6 to 8 percent of the total adult population. It is caused by fungi called tinea unquium, which is also known as dermatophytes or the tinea of the nails.
- Knowing When You Have One. Infection in the toenails is easy to spot. Once you start to notice one of your nails becoming thick, brittle, ragged, crumbly, yellowish and dull, that is a sign that you are having the infection. You might also have nails that have been perceptibly distorted and have lost its luster with dark debris or colors building up underneath it. A more severe case, which is termed as onycholysis, would make the infected nail or nails separate from its nail bed.A slightly foul odor with a slight pain on the toes or the fingertips would also be noticed.
- How Long It Takes? A toenail fungal infection may be difficult to treat. Eliminating the infection can last from four months or more. Since recurrence is highly possible, to completely get rid of the infection, the toenails or fingernails should never be exposed to warm and moist conditions. Or that medication should never be stopped unless the fungi have completely died down.
- Treating toe nail fungal infection: Nail fungus is hard to treat, more so because of high incidence of repeated infections. There are ointment and nail creams that can be bought easily from over the counter but there is no assurance of how effective they can be. There are also oral medications that can be prescribed by some doctors. It usually helps the growth of a new nail, replacing the infected one. But the treatment can be quite a while, and the end result whether the treatment is effective or not will only be seen when the nail grows back.
