Jaundice is a liver disorder caused by obstruction in the bile duct or reduced production of liver cells.
Symptoms of Jaundice
- Yellow coloration of the eyes, skin, tongue and urine.
- Loss of appetite.
- Dull pain in the liver region.
- Nausea, severe constipation, extreme weakness.
- Fever, headache and undue fatigue.
Causes of Jaundice
- Malfunctioning of the liver releases bile salts into the intestine, which get mixed with blood and gives yellow color to the skin.
- Gallstones, inflammation of the liver (hepatitis) are the main cause.
- Dirty surroundings and overcrowding may lead to an epidemic.Anemia, tuberculosis, malaria and typhoid are other causes. Check here for any symptoms of typhoid.
Natural Treatment for Jaundice
- The patient should rest till acute symptoms subside.
- Include fruit juice in daily diet for few weeks.
- Administer hot water enema daily.
- Follow this diet after the severity of the disease is over:
- On rising – A glass of warm water with 2 teaspoon of lime juice.
- Breakfast – One juicy fruit like apple, papaya, mango, grapes or berries and 1 slice of whole wheat bread.
- Mid morning – orange juice
- Lunch – 2 slices of whole wheat bread, a cup of strained vegetable soup, a steamed leafy vegetable and a glass of buttermilk.
- Mid afternoon – coconut water or orange juice.
- Dinner – whole wheat bread, baked potato, steamed vegetable and a glass of hot milk with honey.
- Butter, oils and cream should be avoided for at least 2 weeks.
- Fresh juice from radish leaves is a valuable remedy. Leaves should be pounded and strained. One pound of this juice provides immediate relief to an adult.
- Water Treatment – Drink lots of water with lemon juice to protect damaged liver cells. Hot and cold compresses should be applied alternately to the abdomen. Cold friction twice a day is beneficial. A hot immersion bath for 10 minutes at 104 degree Fahrenheit daily eliminates bile pigment through skin and kidneys.
- Yoga also is equally beneficial.

I am a patient of Hepatitis C Virus (HCV). Previously I was suffering from jaundice, but now I am ok and there is no jaundice so far. I have a question regarding HCV. It is possible to remove HCV completely from the body?
I was suffering from jaundice(Hepatitis E).
My LFT on 30th November was
ALT- 68
Total Bilirubin-0.98
Conjugated bilirubin-0.36
Unconjugated bilirubin- 0.62.
Two weeks ago, it was 41, 0.91, 0.43, and 0.48 respectively.
I am smoking again for the last 2 weeks.(2 cigarettes a day)
Is smoking causing these elevations? Why are SGPT, Bilirubin fluctuating?
Your reports seem to be fine. Generally, doctors compare blood investigation with its normal range.
Any minor fluctuations in readings can happen with different laboratories, their investigation methods and techniques.
As such, smoking is considered harmful. You should stop it at the earliest.
Even after recovery from jaundice, you should take proper diet and get enough rest.
Investigate your SGPT and SGOT levels. Sometimes, minor changes can be seen in readings from one laboratory to another. Eat light food for six months, stay away from alcohol, do less strenuous work for some more time and eat healthy food even after recovery. A repeat of bilirubin and SGPT after a week will help you gauge the effectiveness of your treatment.
I have diabetes for one and half years and taking allopathic medicines. It is now under control (Fasting-75 & PPBS-117). But I am also suffering from throat problem for the last one year. I feel like there is something stuck inside the upper jaw. Sometime I feel it on my left side, sometimes on the right and middle of the upper jaw. I was taking for Serenace for 3 months, then Tryptomer for 4 months and now I am taking Stalopam plus. But I still have the problem. An Endocrinologist is treating me right now.
I am very sick for 1 week now. I am incapacitated completely.
Weak, sleeping a lot, all over yellow skin, red eyes, tomato red tongue, cracked lips, rashes, itchy skin, nausea, headaches, body aches, temperatures, hot cold, sweating, spinning head, red tender palms and feet, flu symptoms, no appetite.
I am alone but I am lucky to have much cool water and fruit juices and sports aid re-hydrating drinks.
I was planning to ride it out but it’s getting no better. It has been 1 week already.
I must get professional help, but I’m so weak and tired.
You must go to an emergency room because you are probably suffering from more than just Jaundice. Of particular concern is the fever. They must figure out what is happening with your liver. There are many other organs that work in tandem with your liver, and if one of them is abnormal, it throws the whole Gastro-Intestinal (GI) system off.
I was in the same condition (incapacitated and ill) for about another 5 days. I felt slightly better on the next day, so called a friend to accompany me to the hospital. By this time, I was severely jaundiced to the extreme. I was also suffering from extreme itchy skin.
They took blood and urine test and gave me a scan of my lower and mid section.
The only diagnosis they could give was liver disease. They ruled out diabetes and gallstones and could find nothing else.
The Doctor told me to completely change my diet and stop drinking. He gave me tablets called Lipochol.
I have been living on a diet of salads, fruits and fruit juices, eggs, milk and wheat bread, and of course regularly taking the tablets.
My condition is greatly improved, though it has taken a few weeks. But I am still not my usual self. Normally I’m fit and can be physically active, but now I tire very easily and need to sleep in the daytime.
Total bilrubin 13.9
Direct 7.8
Indirect 6.1
SGOT(AST) 569
SGPT(ALT) 1187
Alkaline phospatase 107
Albumin 2.9
Scan result: Normal Sonography study of liver, gall bladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, bladder and prostrate.
Doctor has prescribed medicines and advised me to take rest for 15 days.
First of all let me thank this forum for giving concise knowledge about Jaundice.
I have been suffering from jaundice for 2 weeks. Bilirubin total % was 10.5 earlier. Now it has decreased to 5.6.
I wanted to know whether COMPLETE rest is necessary for overcoming Jaundice. Can I use computer or read books? Also, is travelling harmful? Can I attend classes at my college which starts day after tomorrow?
I had some pain in my liver and I did my liver function test recently. The results of the liver test are:
1. S . Billirubin Total 3.51; 2. S Billirubin Direct 0.6 and 3. SGPT 641. I have pain in my liver and certainly feels like these are signs of jaundice.
Jaundice, by itself, is not a disease, but is a symptom possibly indicating some other medical condition. Some of these are potentially serious, and diet adjustments such as drinking fruit juice are insufficient. Anyone with jaundice should see their doctor, conduct a blood test, an ultrasound / CT which will help identify the underlying cause. Avoid alcohol and fatty food while the problem persists.
My 17 year old daughter suffered from malaria with the total parasites of >1000/200 WBC. She was given Quinine through I/V. Her eyes have a mild tinge of yellowish and her urine is dark orange in color. She has to undergo some tests for SGOT and other related tests after 1 week of discharge from the hospital. Are these signs and symptoms of Jaundice?
A diabetic type-1 friend of mine has jaundice. He takes insulin injections twice daily to control the sugar levels. Since lots of juices and juicy fruits are recommended during jaundice, what diet should a diabetic patient follow to treat jaundice?
I had jaundice for about 3 weeks. The last LFT that showed drastic improvement, but Alkaline phosphate showed 255 in the first and 298 in the second report. Are potatoes and chicken to be avoided? Does barley water help?
My husband has had chronic pancreatitis. Although this was not caused by gallstones, he has had his gall bladder removed. It was also not caused by heavy drinking. Because of various complications he has suffered obstructive jaundice. Would the herbs you recommend be of any help to him e.g. Pylanthus Amarus and Chelidonium Majus?
I had lose motion for about 7 to 8 days. It was cured after medication. I do not feel hungry (loss of appetite) and the upper portion of my stomach hurts a little. I pass normal stool now, but urine seems to be yellow in color. My eyes, nails and skin do not reflect yellow though.
Day before yesterday I had severe stomach pain. I got some relief after I threw up. This morning, my eyes have a yellowish tinge. In addition, I have a light stomach ache, headache. My urine is also pale yellow.
Severe abdominal pain can occur in many diseases.Get your urine tested to rule out viral hepatitis after 1 or 2 days.
Eat light food, drink plenty of fluids containing salt and sugar with added lemon juice.
Stool examination is also important to rule out amoebas. If the pain persists, you must consult a physician.
The Bilirubin is high, rest of the parameters for liver profile seem normal. Based on the symptoms you may start taking treatment for Jaundice. Get a sonography of the liver done. Repeat the LFT after a week to see if there is a rise in Bilirubin and SGOT/SGPT.
My blood bilirubin count is high, about 2 points. I have vomiting tendency in the mornings, but do not vomit. I have lost my appetite and am feeling weak and fatigued. Sometimes, urine color is yellow, but not always. Eyes are not yellow. Could this be jaundice?
It could be jaundice. All the symptoms you mentioned constitute jaundice.
Jaundice is a symptom and not the diagnosis. So, it is necessary to identify the underlying cause.
It could be Hepatitis, Hepatic or Gall Bladder Obstruction, or Gall Bladder Dysfunction.
Get the following investigations done:
o Serum bilirubin
o SGOT, SGPT
o X-RAY abdomen
Symptomatic Management of Jaundice:
1. Chelidonium majus, a homoeopathic medicine, is a prominent liver remedy. Chelidonium tones up the liver, relieves nausea and vomiting, and prevents episodes of pain from occurring. It lowers the blood bilirubin level to normal, thus reducing yellow discolorations of the skin and cures yellow urine.
2. Till your appetite returns, consume a diet that is bland, spiced and seasoned very sparingly. Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Coconut water is ideal to settle a deranged gastro-intestinal tract.
3. Stay away from fatty food. It aggravates the condition. Say no to milk, butter, cream, clarified milk fat and margarine for a period of 1 month.
Ensure that you drink a minimum of 2 glasses of lime juice daily. Limes and lemons exert a beneficial effect on the liver, bringing about swift cure.
My 5 year old son is suffering from stomach pain and vomiting. Urine was found yellow in color. He has not been eating well for the last three days. How can we get the urine tested for jaundice and how do we interpret the result of this medical examination?
Jaundice comes from the French word ‘jaune’, meaning yellow. Jaundice is yellow discoloration of skin, sclera, and mucous membrane of the body. It is caused by hyperbilirubinemia: increased amount of bilirubin in the body.
You are referring to viral hepatitis, which is a contagious disease, caused due virus entering through the feco-oral route. Polluted drinking water is one such source from where virus enters the body to cause hepatitis. Jaundice can also be due to any obstruction in the gall bladder, like bladder stone. This symptom is called obstructive jaundice.
My doctor has advised me to take UDIMARIN for 10 days.
