The best way to find out if you have jaundice is to get a blood test done. Having two or more symptoms does not necessarily confirm the disease.

I have one doubt. My blood bilirubin count is high, about 2 points. I have vomiting tendency in mornings, but do not vomit. I do not like to have food. Also, I am weak. Sometimes urine color is yellow but not always, eyes are not yellow. Could this be jaundice.

    Reply This Comment

    Salina Reply:

Yes, you have jaundice. All the symptoms that you have mentioned, constitute jaundice.

Jaundice is a symptom and not the diagnosis. So, it is essential to identify the underlying cause.

It could be hepatitis, hepatic or gall bladder obstruction, or gall bladder dysfunction.

    Get the following investigations done:
    o Serum bilirubin
    o SGOT, SGPT
    o X-RAY abdomen

    Symptomatic management:

    1. Chelidonium majus, a homoeopathic medicine, is a prominent liver remedy. Chelidonium tones up the liver, relieves nausea and vomiting, and prevents episodes of pain from occurring. It lowers the blood bilirubin level to normal, thus reducing yellow discolorations of the skin and cures yellow urine.

    2. Till your appetite returns, consume a diet that is bland, and, spiced and seasoned very sparingly. Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Coconut water is ideal to settle a deranged gastro-intestinal tract.

    3. Stay away from fats. It aggravates the trouble. Say no to milk, butter, cream, clarified milk fat and margarine for a period of 1 month.

    Remember:

Ensure that you drink a minimum of 2 glasses of lime juice daily. Limes and lemons exert a beneficial effect on the liver, bringing about swift cure.

Stop drinking alcohol and follow the procedure to avoid jaundice.
The patient should rest till acute symptoms subside.
Adopt fruit juice fast for a week.
    Administer hot water enema daily.
And follow the below mentioned diet after the severity of the disease is over –
On rising – A glass of warm water with 2 teaspoon of lime juice.
Breakfast – One juicy fruit like apple, papaya, mango, grapes or berries and 1 slice of whole wheat bread.
    Mid morning – orange juice
Lunch – 2 slices of whole wheat bread, a cup of strained vegetable soup, a steamed leafy vegetable and a glass of buttermilk.
Mid afternoon – coconut water or orange juice.
Dinner – whole wheat bread, baked potato, steamed vegetable and a glass of hot milk with honey.
Butter, oils and cream should be avoided for at least 2 weeks.
Fresh juice from radish leaves is a valuable remedy. Leaves should be pounded and strained. One pound of this juice provides immediate relief to an adult.
Water Treatment – Drink lots of water with lemon juice to protect damaged liver cells. Hot and cold compresses should be applied alternately to the abdomen. Cold friction twice a day is beneficial. A hot immersion bath for 10 minutes at 104 degree Fahrenheit daily eliminates bile pigment through skin and kidneys.
    Yoga also is equally beneficial.

I had Jaundice year ago. With all my experience I would like to tell that there is no need to panic about Jaundice but all you need to do is to go for the Blood test. If it is positive, follow the diet: drink lots of water, butter milk, fruit juice Boiled vegetables and take rest at home. Avoid oily or junk food. Jaundice is like just another flu and nothing to worry about it.

The Bilirubin is high, rest of the parameters for liver profile seem normal. Accordingly, to the symptoms take treatment for Jaundice and get a sonography of the liver done. Repeat the LFT after a week to see if there is a rise in Bilirubin and SGOT/SGPT.

Severe abdominal pain can occur in many disease, to search the cause is most important task. The history of eating heavy food should be thought of, the vomiting was due to the spasm of the stomach, it is the way body reacts to external influence.

Meanwhile get your urine test done to rule out viral hepatitis after 1 or 2 days.

Eat light food; drink plenty of fluids containing salt and sugar with added lemon juice.

Stool examination is also important to rule out amoebas still if the pain persist it is advisable to consult a physician.

I wanted to know whether water is one of the reason behind jaundice? And secondly is Jaundice contagious?

    Reply This Comment

    Health Informer Reply:

Jaundice comes from French word “jaune” meaning yellow. Jaundice is yellow discoloration of skin, sclera, and mucous membrane of the body. It is caused by hyperbilirubinemia that is increased amount of bilirubin in the body.
You are referring to viral hepatitis which is a contagious disease, caused due virus entering through the feco-oral route, polluted drinking water is one such source from where virus enters in over body to cause hepatitis.
Jaundice can also be due to any obstruction in the gall bladder like bladder stone, it is called obstructive jaundice.

Jaundice in itself is not a disease but is a symptom possibly indicating further problems. Some of these are potentially serious and diet adjustments such as drinking fruit juice are insufficient. Anyone with jaundice should see their doctor for blood tests and an ultrasound / CT which will help identify the underlying cause. It is advised to avoid alcohol and fatty food while the problem persists.
