What Causes Infected Taste Buds

Infected taste buds are usually caused due to vitamin B complex deficiency, long-term antibiotics drug therapy following radiation, pipe smoking, rubbing by a rough tooth and thickening of tissues in elderly and fungal infection (oral thrush) in those with decreased immunity.

Prevent Infected Taste Buds

  1. Eat a nourishing diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts.
  2. While treating the infection, a diet primarily of raw foods is important.
  3. Avoid tobacco, alcohol and caffeine and do not eat meat or dairy products.
  4. Avoid sugary, fried and processed foods and don’t eat anything greasy.
  5. Wipe the patches with a cloth dipped in a solution of borax, mixed with water or honey.
  6. Rinse your mouth with salt water whenever you feel the first signs of a tongue infection.
  7. Take adequate rest and exercise.
  8. Denture and dental braces should be well-fitted as constant irritation of it can cause infection of taste buds.

Natural Cures for Infected Taste Buds

  • Rinse the mouth with aloe vera juice or mixture of 2 tablespoons each of apple cider vinegar and water and add a pinch of cayenne.
  • Tea tree oil is an anti-infective mouthwash. Put 4 to 5 drops of tea tree oil or grapefruit seed extract in a water pick and use for recurring tongue and mouth infections.
    Tea tree oil is best for external application and do not take it internally as a drink. Apply it several times in a day to the affected area.
  • For fungal tongue infection, one can take goldenseal. Goldenseal contains a principle called as berberine which helps in destroying the fungi. It can be used against every type of fungal infection. It can be applied as external application and can even be taken internally for better results. Use goldenseal for one week only and then switch to other herb.
  • For both fungal and bacterial infection one can use the pepper tree (horopito). Pepper tree contains a principle called as polygodial which helps fight bacteria and fungi.
