Indigestion Natural Home Remedies

Indigestion or Dyspepsia is discomfort in the stomach. It is due to faulty diet which causes imbalance in the secretion of digestive juices.

Symptoms of Indigestion

  • Abdominal pain.
  • Excess gas formation.
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Heartburn.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Undue fullness after eating.
  • Foul breath, coated tongue and bad taste in the mouth.

Causes of Indigestion

  • Eating frequently, overeating, improper chewing and eating too rapidly are the main cause. This leads to hyper acidity.
  • Intake of seafood, radishes, cabbage, beans and onion can cause unfavorable reaction and lead to indigestion in some people.
  • Improperly cooked food and spicy and fried food aggravate conditions further.
  • Excessive smoking, intake of alcohol, constipation, drinking too much water with meals, lack of exercise, fear and anger, jealousy, insomnia are other factors.

Home cures for Indigestion

  • Adopt an all-fruit diet for 5 days.
  • Lemon is particularly beneficial for indigestion. It inhabits the formation of acids in the stomach, removes harmful substances and promotes a healthy appetite.
  • Orange juice is effective for chronic indigestion. It stimulates flow of digestive juices, improves digestion and increases appetite.
  • Grapes help eliminate indigestion, reduce stomach irritation and relieve heat.
  • Half a glass of pineapple juice after a meal relieves digestive disorders.
  • Walking, swimming, golf, yoga and other light exercises aid digestion.
  • Water Treatment like administering enema daily. Massage the abdomen, cold friction bath, alternate hot and cold hip baths at night, application of ice bag over the stomach half an hour after meals and wet girdle-pack applied at night is also beneficial.
  • Water or other liquids should be taken half an hour before or one hour after a meal.
  • Chew food as thoroughly as possible.
  • Never eat to a full stomach.
  • Miss a meal or two when you lack appetite.
  • Steamed vegetables are better than boiled ones.
  • Avoid eating too many varieties at the same meal.
  • Never eat raw vegetables and raw fruits together.

Anorexia Nervosa is a psychological disorder seen in young women with loss of appetite due to nervous anxiety.There is a reduced intake of food (virtually nothing) in efforts to slim.

Symptoms of Anorexia Nervosa

  • The patient may lose 25% of normal body weight.
  • Limited sleep and refuses to eat.
  • Depressed, irritated and impatient.
  • Stoppage of menstruation and lack of sexual desire.
  • It my be fatal in some cases.

Causes of Anorexia Nervosa

  • Women, who are obsessed with high standard of perfection, who fear failure in any undertaking and who have faced specific criticism about their figure, fail to eat proper food, and at a point eat almost nothing.
  • This can lead to metabolic upset and serious illness.

Treatment of Anorexia Nervosa

  • Family and friends should try and explain the patients their problem right at the outset.
  • Firstly the patient should be put on orange or carrot juice diet (every 2 hrs) with warm water for 3-5 days. Warm water enema should be used to clean the bowels. Then they should be put on an all fruit diet (3 meals) for 2-3 days. Later they can opt to easily digestible foods like lightly cooked vegetables, buttermilk and juicy fruits for at least 10 days and finally start off with a well-balanced diet of fresh fruits, raw vegetables, nuts, grains and seeds.
  • Apply ice-bag over the stomach 1/2 hr before meals.
  • Wear thin cotton underwear wrung in cold water and upon that wear thick dry cotton underwear for an hour/ a cold hip-bath once daily also helps.
  • Lime juice mixed with ginger juice and rock salt, placed in the sun for 3 days and1tsp of this should be taken after each meal to improve appetite.
  • Oranges, Apples stimulate digestive juices, improve digestion and increase appetite.
  • Garlic soup to which lemon juice is added can tone digestive system and improve appetite.
  • Lick ground ginger with salt.
  • Bread prepared with sour grape juice should be used continuously for 2-3 weeks.
  • Other treatments include abdominal massage, outdoor activities and daily sun and cool air baths.
