What causes a person to cough? Why do people cough? What are the common types of coughs that affect us humans? Here are a few simple facts on coughs and coughing:
- Coughing often occurs when we need to clear an irritant or a blockage from our respiratory passages or the body’s airways.
- Coughing is also brought about by certain illnesses like the flu or even the common cold.
- There are two distinct types of coughs: the dry cough and the chesty cough.
- When a person suffers from a dry cough, he or she finds that their throat gets easily irritated and painful since there is no expectoration of phlegm or mucus from the blocked air passages.
- A dry cough is usually brought about by irritants like dust, smoke and other pollutants.
Serious Illness that Causes Cough
While a cough may not be serious when it is simply your body trying to expel pollutants and phlegm from your airways, there are some coughs that may need to be addressed by a medical professional. These coughs include the following:
- Pneumonia is one of the more serious illnesses where a person will be coughing. This is often caused by bacteria or viruses and is an infection that happens in the lungs.
- Asthma is another illness that can induce coughing. A person will need medical attention or special medication to help with an asthma attack.
- Smoker’s cough is another cough that indicates that there is more to the cough than is being seen. This is a serious problem that needs to be addressed by the person and with the help of a doctor.
Home Remedies for Cough
Coughs that are not associated with serious diseases can be treated at home, and some of these treatments are easy to make and are even handed down from our ancestors. Here are some of them:
- Try mixing together some honey and ground white pepper. Simply measure out a teaspoon of honey to a pinch pepper and drink this mixture three times a day for five days to relieve yourself of your cough.
- For coughs that are brought about by colds, simply make some tea out of ginger. Peel, cut, and boil some ginger and drink this with honey to ease your cough as well as your cold.
- A cough syrup made with equal parts of onion juice and honey is also an effective home remedy for coughs. Take this syrup twice a day for the next few days until your cough clears.
