What is Chest Congestion and its Symptoms
Usually, the ones who are affected by chest congestion are often young children and this usually happens when they suffer from a cold or a cough. Adults can also fall victim to chest congestion. What exactly is a congested chest and why do people suffer from this, sometimes over and over again? Here are a few facts about chest congestion:
- When a person suffers from chest congestion, there may be a few reasons why and few different meanings to the word congestion.Some people call a certain feeling of tightness in their chest, a chest congestion while others define it as difficulty in breathing or a shortness of breath.
- Chest congestion can sometimes mean a heart ailment or problem. This can be ascertained with the accompanying symptoms that a person feels or sees. If a heart problem is associated with chest congestion, you are likely to see symptoms like swollen ankles, palpitations and difficulty in breathing at night.This usually happens when a person has a history of heart problems.
Causes of Chest Congestion
What makes a person suffer from chest congestion? How does a person get a congested feeling in their chest? Here are some possibilities:
- When you have a feeling of tightness in your chest that is accompanied by wheezing and a dry cough, the possible reason for your chest congestion could be asthma.
- Sometimes a congestion of your chest is the result of an infection. When an infection is the culprit, you will notice that the phlegm you expel every time you cough is either yellowish or greenish in color and is sticky or thick.
- When an infection is the cause of your chest congestion, you might find that this is often accompanied by other symptoms like a fever or feeling cold.
- The infections that you might be suffering if you have chest congestion may include bronchitis, pneumonia, a cold, or emphysema, among others.
Home Remedies for Chest Congestion
Aside from going to see a doctor for help with your chest congestion problems and a possible diagnosis of the cause, you can actually get home relief from the tightness of your chest with these remedies:
- Drink lots of fluids, preferably fresh fruit juices that are laden with vitamin C and water.
- Warm tea can also help ease the congestion of your chest by loosening up the phlegm that is blocking your air passages. Try drinking peppermint or chamomile tea for this purpose.
- Steam is also a big help when trying to loosen up the congestion in your chest. Try inhaling some steam with eucalyptus oil or peppermint in it to give you some relief.

Aloha, for the past month + I have had a congested chest, very hard to clear, can’t most of the time, nose runs from time to time sneezing like 5 to 10 times at a time, eyes water, I don’t drink or smoke, eat healthy, 71 years old,exercise, just can’t seem to shake it and hope it does not shake me, open for ideas.

The above symptoms are part of the respiratory tract infection. They are present simultaneously in some people.
Some home remedies like Aniseed can be tried. A tea made from these spice, can be taken regularly for treating this condition.
Dried roots of turmeric plant are useful in congestion. The powder made from it can be taken regularly with honey.
Avoid cold drinks. Steam inhalation can loosen up the congestion in the chest.
If you have underlying heart problem, look out for other symptoms like ankle swelling, cyanosis (bluish discoloration of nails) to confirm it.

Take one piece of dried ginger, a few cumin seeds and some pepper. Powder these items (coarse powder) and boil with one or two glasses of drinking water. Put some jaggery in it. Drink it two or three time a day.
