Home remedies for Cervical Spondylosis

Cervical Spondylosis is a degenerative disease of the cervical region of the spine. The spine is made of blocks of bone, in-between them cushions of cartilage and elastic tissues are present called inter-vertebral discs which act as shock absorbers, but when the space between the cervical vertebrae narrows, nerves are compressed and causes pain. This is called Cervical Spondylosis.

Symptoms of Cervical Spondylosis

Continual severe pain which may spread to both side of shoulders, collar bone, head-side and backside of neck; pain may occur in both the arms and fingers; acute or chronic stiffness that may lead to restricted movements; giddiness, headache, numbness or complete loss of sensation on affected side; weakness in the muscles of hand or arm.

Causes of Cervical Spondylosis

  • Injury especially to the neck.
  • Faulty posture due to soft chair and coaches.
  • Improper lifting of weights.
  • Stress and strain caused by sitting for a long time.
  • Incorrect nutrition and psychological strains.
  • Lack of exercise weakens the muscles and makes them vulnerable.

Treatment of Cervical Spondylosis

  • Walking, bicycling and swimming improve the supply of nutrients to spinal discs and delays process of deterioration.
  • People with sedentary occupation should change positions often, stand up every hour, avoid soft cushioned seats, use thin pillows or avoid it, and sleep on firm mattresses with knees bent at right angles to the torso.
  • Perform joint movements moving wrists up and down, folding and unfolding fingers, rotating wrists clockwise and anticlockwise, moving neck up and down, moving to the sides and rotating it clockwise and anticlockwise.
  • The patient should have 4 meals a day consisting of milk, salad of raw vegetables, steamed vegetables, whole-wheat bread and sprouts. Adequate amounts of proteins, vitamin C, Vitamin D, calcium and phosphorus are also essential. Avoid sour curd, sugar, spicy, fried and fatty foods, tea and coffee, refined and processed food and tobacco and smoking.
  • 2-3 cloves of garlic should be taken in the morning. Oil prepared by frying 10 cloves of garlic in 60gms of oil, cooled and then applied vigorously in affected part left for 3 hours and then take a warm bath. This should be followed for 15 days.
  • Lemon juice mixed with salt should be taken 2-3 times daily and chebulic myrobalan after meals gives quick relief.
  • Yoga or hot fomentation for 5-10 minutes twice a day or mild oil massage to neck, shoulders and hands are beneficial.

    Chebulic myrobalan is supposed to be a long life elixir. The fruit of chebulic myrobalan contains astringent substance called chebulinic acid. It also contains tannic acid, Gallic acid, resin, and purgative properties.
    It has many medicinal virtues, among it, its laxative effect is very prominent.
    The main focus of action is on the gastrointestinal tract.
    1. Hyperacidity-: It neutralizes the acidity of the stomach if taken after food. The juice mixed with juice of gooseberry gives better result.
    2. Constipation-: It is a mild and safe laxative. The pulp of 2 to 3 fruits taken with cloves or cinnamon at bed time normalizes the evacuation process in the morning.
    3. Diarrhea and Dysentery-: In chronic diarrhea, the pulp of the fruit is given with honey and cinnamon to give good result.
    4. Hemorrhoids-: Chebulic Myrobalan is also a remedy for piles due to its astringent property it cures the hemorrhoids. Its laxative effect helps in smooth bowel movements.
    The drug is also useful in skin disorder like chronic ulcer, wounds.
    Asthma and whitlow are other disorders that are cured by this herb
    Chebulic myrobalan is a good hair tonic; the paste of the fruit is boiled with coconut oil and applied on the hair. It has the property to darken the hair.
