High Cholesterol Remedy and Diet | Causes Of High Levels of Cholesterol
Question: I have been told my cholesterol and potassium both are High (elevated). I am not a healthy eater (I’m a 38 female) so I am trying to come up with an appropriate diet. Could my daily dose of diet coke be a factor to the potassium level to be high? Also can you please suggest me diet plan that will help me to reduce my high cholesterol?
Causes of High Levels of Cholesterol
Hypercholestolaemia or high level of cholesterol is a lifestyle disorder.
- The causes are multifactorial, chiefly associated with a diet which is high in fats, especially, saturated fats (butter, margarine) and trans fats (biscuits, cookies, cakes).
- Non vegetarian food also contributes to increased levels of cholesterol.
- High levels of cholesterol are also linked to stress.
- Type A personalities – people who are always in a rush, restless, get angry easily are more prone.
- Poor exercise, coupled with a sedentary way of life, and long hours at the keyboard, further aggravate the condition.
- Smoking and alcohol are other causative factors.
High Cholesterol Diet and Remedies
Cut down on fats, especially saturated and Trans. Let your dietary fat comprise of MUFA (groundnut oil, olive oil) and PUFA (sunflower oil, safflower)
- Walnuts are good sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which help the heart.
- Reduce your intake of salt.
- Eat at least 2 fruits every day.
- Consume only cow’s milk.
- If you are a non vegetarian, steer clear of egg yolk. The egg white can be had once a week. Stay away from organ meat and red meat.
- Avoid frying. Opt for boiling and grilling instead.
- Avoid all packed/ tinned/ canned foods. They are loaded with sodium and fats, which is not good for you.
- Salads will do wonders for you, by increasing the HDL or ‘good cholesterol’ – ‘protective cholesterol’.
- Drink at least 2 liters of water daily.
High blood cholesterol, when associated with low HDL, results in the deposition of plaque in the arteries, blocking them, thus increasing the risk of coronary heart diseases.
You ought to be all the more particular, if there is a family history of high blood pressure and heart disease.
Get your lipid profile (cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL, VLDL), done every 3months.
Also keep a check on your blood pressure, have it measured once a week.
