Hiatus Hernia Symptoms and Natural Cures

Hiatus Hernia happens when the upper wall of the stomach is displaced or protrudes at the point where the gullet passes from the chest to the abdominal area. It is quite common in old age.

Symptoms of Hiatus Hernia

  • Pain behind the breastbone, at the end of the breastbone; behind the right shoulder blade, right lower ribs, and base of throat and in the left chest.
  • The pain increases when the patient bends with effort and lies down.
  • There is discomfort in swallowing.
  • And after meals there is bloated feeling, fullness and heartburn.

Causes of Hiatus Hernia

  • Faulty diet that includes refined sugar and products, white flour, flavorings and preservatives weaken the muscle tone, devitalize the system.
  • As a result the muscles become less flexible, fibrous and connective tissue suffer from poor nutrition and gets easily decomposed and damaged and leads to hiatus hernia.
  • Tea, coffee, alcohol consumption, smoking, mental and emotional tensions, shallow breathing, overeating, sedentary occupation without exercise are other factors.

Treatment of Hiatus Hernia

  • Practice relaxation through diaphragmatic breathing. Lie down with both knees bent and feet close to the buttocks. Shoulders and chest should remain at rest throughout. Put both hands lightly on the abdomen and breathe in until no more air can be inhaled. Then relax, breathing out through the mouth and allow the abdominal wall to sink back.
  • Yoga is also good.
  • Drink water 1/2 hour before and 1 hour after meals and not along with meals to reduce incidence of heartburn. It also prevents gas formation and fermentation that may distend the stomach and cause discomfort and pain.
  • Take frequent small meals with thorough chewing.
  • Diet should comprise of fresh fruits, lightly cooked vegetables, whole grain cereals, seeds, nuts and sprouts.
  • Avoid denatured foods.
  • Carrot juice is alkaline and soothes the stomach. Juice should be diluted with water and taken 1/2 hour before each meal.
  • Drinks should be sipped slowly.
  • Avoid extreme hot and cold foods and drinks.

    I was diagnosed with a sliding hiatus hernia 3mnths ago and take nexium. It helped at first but not anymore. I am in so much pain and discomfort. I am taking slippery elm which I am not sure if it helps. I am going to try carrot juice. can you recommend anything else. thanks
