Home treatment for Head Lice
Head Lice are wingless, flat and tiny insects found in the scalp. They are parasites suck blood by biting the skin, which causes irritation. In chronic cases it causes pigmentation and thickening of the skin.
Itching is the main symptom. Nits are laid close to the surface of the scalp and can be seen gradually; sometimes insects can be seen crawling on hair. They are specially found underneath hair growth at the back of the neck, around the ear and on the scalp.
Causes of Head Lice
They are common in people living in poor sanitary condition crowded together. They are highly infectious and can be acquired by close or head-to-head contact with a person already infected with the parasite.
Treatment of Head Lice
- Hair brushes, combs, pillows and towels should not be shared.
- Comb and hairbrush of infected person should be scrubbed with soap and water daily, and then boiled after use.
- Lice should be removed with special comb with close-knit teeth.
- Mix equal parts of kerosene and vinegar. Apply it to the scalp for 24 hours. Then wash the hair thoroughly with shampoo and hot water. After drying remove the nits with a comb dipped in hot vinegar. Repeat this procedure 2-3 times.
- Cleanse the whole body and apply 5% benzyl benzoate to all itching areas.
- Dust 95% inert talc with 5% DDT powder into the hair and scalp. Wrap the entire head in a scarf. Next morning use fine tooth comb to get rid of dead lice and nits. On the seventh day hair should be washed and allowed to dry. Then the DDT powder should be applied again like before and on the fourteenth day give a final shampoo.
- Heads should be examined thoroughly in case of doubt. Head dress worn by person with lice should be sterilized with 5% DDT solution.
Prevention of Head Lice
- Keep away from infected persons and their clothing and maintain personal hygiene and cleanliness.
- As children are more affected, maintain short hair for them.
