Goitre is the swelling of the thyroid gland in the neck. Goitre may occur even without the swelling. Women are more prone to this disease during puberty, pregnancy and menopause, or when they are overworked and do not get sufficient rest and relaxation.
Symptoms of Goitre
Goitre symptoms appear very gradually. Emotional upsets, depression, weeping, easy irritation, lack of concentration, nervous breakdown, rapid and regular heartbeat, lack of power to make muscular effort, feeling of extreme tiredness, loss of weight, protruding eyes and tremor of the hands.
Causes of Goitre
- Deficiency of iodine is the most common cause of Goitre.
- People living near the sea rarely contract it because all seafood is rich in iodine.

I have a swollen neck. Doctors say its hypothyroidism. They have not confirmed, because they sent me for a blood test, tsh t3, t4. Could I have a swollen neck and it is not goitre. I was recently diagnosed with sinus and shortly after my neck was swollen my sinus is now draining could this be as a result of my sinus.
I am a girl of 22 years. I am too tensed because of swollen thyroid. I tried all medicines like homeopathy, ayurvedic but my thyroid is not reducing. I have consulted the doctor but TSH report was clear. But my throat has enlarged. It has been 2 years approximately. From this site I have been applying dandelion leaves with clarified butter but no improvement in my thyroid condition at all. Also I have followed the diet chart but no improvement. Please can you help me with curing my thyroid.
Diet prescription:
1. To begin with, there are certain foods that have to be strictly avoided. They are: cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, radish leaves, mustard leaves and millets.
2. Stay away from flesh foods.
3. Avoid milk, and aerated beverages.
4. Up your intake of iodine rich foods such as tomatoes, asparagus, strawberries, and sea food.
5. Consume only iodized salt.
Investigations:
Get you T3, T4, TSH levels assessed again. I could help you better if you gave me their counts.
Get an XRAY done.
Also, answering the following check list would be beneficial:
- Family history of goiter?
- Menstrual changes?
- Increased irritability and mood swings?
- Weight loss/ weight gain?
- Blood pressure?
What homoeopathic medication have you taken and for how long?
What dietary prescriptions have you been following?
You must also bear in mind, that the treatment of goiter is a slow process and once cured there could be recurrences but of reduced intensity.
Acupressure point:
The area on your palm, a little below where the thumb ends corresponds to the thyroid gland. Applying pressure to this site has shown therapeutic results in the management of goiter.
Daily, press, this point, on both the palms, for 1 minute.
Yeah my grandmother has a large goitre. And about my menstrual changes it comes in 35-40 days. So its irregular with me. Yeah I get angry very soon and am very much moody. Within a second my mood changes from happiness to anger. And about my weight its constant for more than 4 years its 45kg. And my blood pressure is normal.
My diet: I usually drink 2 glass of milk per day.. so should I stop?
