What is Ear Wax (Cerumen)?
Ear Wax is secreted by glands in the outer portion of ear canal and is yellowish orange. It mainly protects the skin from infection. When earwax is pushed deep into the ear canal or it is over secreted there is a feeling of fullness and discomfort in the ear.
Symptoms of Ear Wax (Cerumen)
- Sometimes intensity of pain varies.
- Hearing diminishes with or without pain.
- In rare cases there is balance problems.
Causes of Ear Wax (Cerumen)
- The wax dries and flakes off and moves to the outer ear. When the wax moves inwards, buildup occurs.
Home remedies for Ear Wax (Cerumen)
- If you have a perforated eardrum, do not put any liquid into your ear.
- Otherwise if wax does not accumulate put 1 to 2 drops of warm vegetable oil, twice a day in each ear.
- Then hold your head upright and flush warm water into the ear with a bulb syringe and then turn sideways and let the water drain.
Ear Wax (Cerumen) Prevention
- Do not use ear buds if you do not produce abundant earwax and do not clean your ear canal with bobby pins as hearing maybe temporarily impaired.
- After bathing, use cotton balls to dry and clean your outer ears.

Some times there is excessive secretion of wax in the inner ear due to its glands, then the wax is pushed to the external ear. To prevent it’s accumulation clean it regularly with a cotton ball or by a soft ear bud. Do not allow the wax to harden. Regularly put few drops of vegetable oil to soften it, so that it becomes easy while removing the wax.
Have hearing loss going on now for 5 days. This happened 5 years ago also after wax build up. I have tried ear wax removal solution (store bought) peroxide and ear flushing using a syringe. Holding the head straight. Yesterday after using peroxide and the ear flushing I did get some ear waxed removed however, still can not hear out of the left ear. I know this is the problem. Used a cotton swab tip. I must have entered the ear canal. I know dumb idea and I won’t do this again. Problem did not exist until I used the the cotton swab tip. Please advise what solution could help in loosing the wax to be removed easily with the syringe with a warm water solution. Ear doe not hurt, has no ringing and balance at this time is fine. Just annoying that I can not hear.
Thank you
Your problem is, you must have pushed the wax more inside the ear, as it blocks the inner ear there may be decreased sound reflection over the ear drum.
Please do not try to remove the wax now but instead put some wax softener before trying to manipulate. It will make the task of removing it easier.
