Causes of Dry Cough
Dry Cough is the most common respiratory symptom. It occurs due to irritation of the mucous membrane anywhere in the respiratory tract. It can be caused due to infection which can be acute or chronic. Acute infection is commonly caused due to laryngitis, bronchitis, bronchiolitis, pneumonia, and whooping cough.
Chronic cough is due to pulmonary tuberculosis, chronic bronchitis, chronic laryngitis, bronchiectasis and lung abscess.
Mechanical irritation also can cause dry cough (inhalation of dust irritant gases, chemical fumes, smoking etc.)
Foreign body in larynx or bronchi can cause cough and also in broncho-spasm or asthma.
Dry cough can also be due to pressure on air passages as in pulmonary edema, pnuemothorax and pericardial effusion.
Home Remedy for Dry Cough
- Salt water gargles with steam inhalation should be done at the first occurrence of the symptom. Usually this helps in relieving the cough.
- Aniseed is useful in those with hard dry cough and also with expectoration. A tea is prepared with this spice and should be taken regularly for treating dry cough.
- Belleric myroblan is a household remedy for dry cough. Two grams of the pulp of the fruit, one pinch of table salt, half a teaspoon of long pepper and two teaspoons of honey should be mixed well. This should be taken two times in a day. Dried fruit of belleric myroblan is also used in this condition. The dried fruit is covered with wheat flour and roasted and is taken 3 to 4 times in a day.
- Raw onion is also useful in this condition. Onion is mashed and juice is extracted from it. One teaspoon of this juice should be mixed with one teaspoon of honey and kept for 4 to 5 hours. Your cough syrup for dry cough is ready. This should be taken two times in a day.
