Diverticulitis is a condition where the muscular wall of the colon allows the mucous membrane lining the large intestine to form pouches, which may become inflamed and becomes lodging space for fecal matter and decaying particles. X-Rays usually establish it.
Symptoms of Diverticulitis
- Pain in the left side of the lower abdomen.
- Bleeding.
- Diarrhea or constipation or alternation of the two.
- Attacks may recur over long time.
- Persons may develop anemia and other intestinal and general problems due to increase of toxins.
- It may also lead to peri-colic abscess, fistula to bladder, vagina etc.
Causes of Diverticulitis
- Highly refined foods with low-residue and roughage are the main cause.
- Severe mental tension forces the gas against intestinal walls, which sometimes leads to the formation of diverticulitis.
Treatment of Diverticulitis
- The patient should take frequent small meals comprising of high roughage like whole grains, seeds and nuts, vegetables and fruits; flax seeds, yogurt, buttermilk and potatoes should be taken in sufficient quantities.
- Use warm water enema to avoid constipation.
- Unprocessed wheat bran is highly beneficial and can be used from 1 tablespoon a day to 3 tablespoon thrice a day depending on the severity. It can be mixed with milk, water, soup and porridge.
- Fruit juices of lemon, papaya, apple, pineapple and vegetable juices like beetroot, carrots, green vegetables are good.
- Vitamin C helps to remove toxins, Vitamin B strengthen muscular and nervous systems.
- Only in severe cases surgery needs to be performed.
