Diarrhea or Loose Motions is the passage of loose or watery unformed stools more then 3-4 times a day. It can be acute or chronic. Water is either secreted in excess by the organs of the body or is unabsorbed.

Causes of Diarrhea or Loose Motions
- Eating wrong foods or overeating.
- Use of antibiotics.
- Excessive intakes of laxatives.
- Nervous irritability.
- Fermentation.
- Contaminated water and food through which parasites, germs, virus, bacteria or poison have entered the body.
- Allergy to certain foods.
- Fright in children or emotional stress and strain.
Treatment of Diarrhea or Loose Motions
- In severe cases, fast for 2 days only on hot water to provide rest for gastro-intestinal tract. Gradually start with light mild foods.
- Buttermilk contains acid that fights germs and bacteria, it can be mixed with a pinch of salt and drink 3-4 times a day to control diarrhea.
- Pomegranate juice has astringent properties and about 50 ml should be given repeatedly.
- To cure chronic diarrhea turmeric rhizome, its juice or dry powder can be taken in plain water or buttermilk, it is a useful intestinal antiseptic.
- About 2 grams dried mango seed powder with or without honey can be taken.
- Carrot soup prevents vomiting and growth of harmful intestinal bacteria and should be given every half hour.
- Bananas, garlic, starchy liquids like rice gruel, barley water, arrowroot water and coconut water are good.
- In case of diarrhea due to indigestion – dry or fresh ginger brings relief. 1/4 teaspoon of dry ginger and rock salt should be taken with a small piece of jaggery.
- Cold hip baths and abdominal compress renewed every 15-20 minutes is the best water treatment.
