Home Remedies for Cystitis: Baking Soda, Cranberry Juice, Water

Cystitis is a common complaint in women where the bladder is inflamed. E.Coli bacteria inhibit the colon, travel to the vagina, urethra and into the bladder. Re-occurrence of cystitis may sometimes be associated with kidney trouble.

Symptoms of Cystitis

  • Discomfort, continual urge to urinate, frequency and burning on urination.
  • Pain in the pelvis and lower abdomen.
  • Stingy, thick and dark urine may contain blood or pus.
  • Sometimes there maybe pain on lower back and scalding sensation on passing urine.
  • There maybe rise in temperature in acute cases.
  • In the chronic form symptoms are similar but less severe and no rise in body temperature.

Causes of Cystitis

  • Infections in the kidney.
  • Urethra and vagina.
  • Formation of stones in the bladder or kidney that are adjacent to the bladder can cause cystitis.
  • If urine is retained for a very long time inflamed and local irritation of the bladder maybe caused.
  • Severe constipation, certain surgical procedures, childbirth injuries are other factors.

Home Remedies and Natural Treatment of Cystitis

  • In case of acute cystitis with fever, the patient should fast on water or tender coconut for 3-4 days.
  • Baking Soda
  • Cranberry juice is helpful in relieving the symptoms
  • In absence of fever, raw carrot juice should be diluted with water and should be taken every 2 hours.
    Keep warm and take sufficient rest.
  • Apply heat to the abdomen to relieve pain.
  • Little vegetable oil should be gently rubbed into the skin to avoid reddening for 4-5 days.
  • Eat ripe fruits like pears, melon, grapes, peaches and apple.
  • Cold compresses should be applied to the abdomen to relieve pelvic congestion and increase activity of the skin.
  • Poultry, fish and meat should be avoided as they produce uric acid.
  • In case of chronic cystitis, the patient should adopt restricted diet for 7-10 days.
    1. Upon arising – 1 glass of unsweetened carrot or apple juice.
    2. Breakfast – fresh fruits, glass of buttermilk with honey.
    3. Mid Morning – tender coconut water.
    4. Lunch – salad of raw vegetables, mixed with curd and 1 teaspoon honey and 1 ripe apple.
    5. Mid afternoon – 1 cup unsweetened grape juice.
    6. Dinner – salad of green leafy vegetable and a fresh fruit preferably melon.
    7. Before retiring – a glass of mixed carrot and beetroot juice.

Gradually, a well-balanced diet should be adopted.
