Corn is localized thickening of the skin. It is relatively small and painful as compared to callosity where the thickening is over a large area.

 
Symptoms of Corns

They are pyramid shaped and the apex points inwards, usually found on the soles of the feet and joints of the toes. They are tender when touched.

 
Causes of Corns

  • Incorrect footwear causes pressure on skin surfaces of the feet and toes, and toes are malformed.
  • High heels crams the toes together causing inconvenience and is the main cause.

 
Treatment of Corns

  • Firstly stop wearing the footwear that caused it.
  • Cut the corn off with a sharp knife or razor and apply the sap of papaya tree over it. Then it should be covered with a cut lemon and bandaged.
  • Soak foot in hot soap solution to soften it, and remove the corn with a sharp scalpel without causing bleeding and the space should be filled in with Vaseline and a drop of lemon juice.
  • The feet should be bathed daily. In case of soft corns the bland powder should be applied between the toes and wool should be inserted.
  • For Corn, which is just appearing paste made by grinding liquorices, sticks mixed with mustard or sesame oil should be applied at bedtime over hardened skin.
  • Juice of raw papaya can be applied 3 times a day.
  • Juice of pineapple can also be applied externally.
  • Fresh slice of lemon or skin of ripe bananas can be tied over the painful area overnight.
  • Oil extracted from outer-shell of cashew nut can also be applied.
  • For corns of long duration milky juice of green figs can be applied.
  • Pulp of raw potato should be bandaged on the corn and left for 2-3 hours.
  • Epsom salt bath 2 times a day is just as good.
