Cirrhosis of Liver refers to all forms of liver disease characterized by significant loss of cells. The liver gradually contracts in size and becomes leathery and hard. The loss of liver cells exceeds cell replacement, the vascular system is distorted and flow of blood through liver is interfered. Prolonged degeneration of liver structure and function may lead to hepatic failure and death.

 
Symptoms of Cirrhosis of Liver

  • Loss of weight.
  • Abdominal pain.
  • Indigestion.
  • Gas.
  • Occasional nausea and vomiting are early symptoms.
  • In advanced stage, jaundiced skin, low grade fever, foul breath, distended veins, swollen and bloated abdomen, considerable bleeding from the stomach, hair-like red markings on the face, neck, arms and trunks are seen.

Causes of Cirrhosis of Liver

  • If 500 ml of alcohol is consumed daily for around 10 years, one may develop cirrhosis of liver. So excessive use of alcohol is the prime factor.
  • Poor nutrition is another factor.
  • Drug treatments for fever, syphilis and habitual taking of quinine for a long duration in tropical climate.
  • Excess intake of highly seasoned food.
  • Highly toxic condition of the system.
  • Anything which overburdens the liver cells and leads to their final breakdown are other factors.

 Treatment of Cirrhosis of Liver

  • The patient should be kept in bed and avoid alcohol.
  • Initially a juice fast should be adopted for 7 days especially grapes, lemon, papaya and beet.
  • This is to be followed by fruit and milk diet for 2-3 weeks. 1 liter of milk should be consumed daily initially, then it has to be increased by 250 ml daily so that you consume 2 ½ liters of milk daily. It should be sipped very slowly.
  • Then a well balanced diet with emphasis on high quality protein is adapted that includes raw goats milk, raw nuts like almonds, sprouted seeds and grains, home-made raw cottage cheese.
  • Vegetables like beets, carrots, bitter gourd, radish, tomato, and eggplant are useful.
  • Constipation should be eradicated. Bowels should be cleaned with warm water enema.
  • Application of alternate compress to liver area to be followed by general wet sheet rub.
  • Breathing exercises and morning dry friction are also beneficial.
  • Fats and oils; refined, processed and canned foods; strong tea and coffee; spices and condiments, sugar, salt should be used sparingly.
