Chicken Pox is an infectious and highly contagious disease, occurs more frequently in cooler weather in children between 5-9 years of age. The attack is severe in older children.

Symptoms of Chicken Pox

  • Weakness, low-grade fever, loss of appetite and mild headache.
  • Rashes of tiny red spots appear usually on the chest and upper back.
  • In severe cases rashes may appear on the face and lower extremities, the blisters form scabs-which fall off.
  • Lesions come in successive crops so that while some are beginning to form others are drying.
  • The duration may vary from 10-21 days and the intensity also varies.
  • Some have it in the mouth, nose, ear, and over most of the body limbs.

Causes of Chicken Pox

Chicken Pox is caused by a virus, and in children it is comparatively a mild illness. It spreads if you come in contact with the person suffering from it, or by inhaling dust contaminated by dried scabs; persistent wrong feeding leads to a natural healing crisis.

Treatment of Chicken Pox

  • Until all the scabs fall off, the patient should be kept in a well ventilated room.
  • Nails should be cut off to prevent scratching, infections and scars.
  • Cotton gloves can be worn and itching can be reduced by applying talcum powder.
  • Plenty of vegetable and fruit juices should be given in the beginning especially lemon juice.
  • Lukewarm water bath with neem leaves added can relieve itching or 2 cups of oatmeal cooked in 2 liters water for 15 minutes should be put in a cotton bag and swished around in a tub, the water should then be applied all over the scalds to relieve itching or a glass of water with baking soda in it should be sponged and let to dry. This will prevent itching and scratching.
  • The water in which green peas have been cooked or 1/2 cup of cider vinegar added to a bath of warm water relieves irritation of the skin.
  • Application of Vitamin E oil has healing effect and fades the marks.
  • Tea prepared from any herb like marigold, basil and chamomile to which cinnamon, lemon and honey has been added, has sedative effect and should be sipped very slowly several times a day.
  • Boiled coriander and carrot should be taken once a day.
