Question:
I have blocked eustachian tube, somebody told that garlic oil would work as home remedy? Can you please give me your suggestion? Also let me know other home remedies for eustachian tube dysfunction?
Answer:
Eustachian tube connects the tympanic cavity to the naso-pharynx. It is approximately 3.75cm in adults and smaller in infants. The tube is closed at rest, but the muscles of the soft palate and naso-pharyngeal sphincter open it during yawning and swallowing.
This is the reason why the Eustachian tube gets easily blocked and is the commonest cause of middle ear infections and in majority of cases the infection in the middle ear reaches via the Eustachian tube.
Causes of Blocked Eustachian Tube and Eustachian Tube Dysfunction
- Infections like adenoids, tonsillitis, rhinitis, sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, pharyngitis and influenza.
- While swimming water entering the nose may block the tube.
- Often forcible blowing of nose may push the infection into the tube leading to blockage.
- Feeding bottle- the use of feeding bottle for an adult in supine position may easily allow milk to enter Eustachian tube while swallowing and causing blockage and further leading to middle ear infections.
Symptoms of Blocked Eustachian Tube
- Clinically due to blocking of Eustachian tube, the oxygen in the middle ear cavity is absorbed and a negative pressure is created. This retracts the tympanic membrane and causes congestion.
- Initially patient complains of heaviness in ear followed by severe pain in ear which tends to be more at night in lying down position.
Home Remedies and Natural Treatment for Blocked Eustachian tube

I have suffered with blocked eustachian tubes in both ears and hearing loss, for many years. Sometimes they clear up in a few months. Other times not for several years. I have been to several ENT’s over the years and have had tubes placed in both ears. Yes, I did get my hearing back, but they allowed my ears to drain which was a constant embarrassment. So I would have to place cotton balls in my ears, ergo, loss of hearing again. I have also tried every home remedy I could find on the Internet, including the one that calls for mixing 4 Way Antihistimine with a NediPot saline solution. Nothing worked until I stumbled across a remedy of my own. It provides ongoing relief and is easy to do. You see, I also suffer from COPD. When my breathing is impaired I use a nebulizer inhaler machine with a solution of Albuterol. Albuterol opens the passage ways in the lungs to improve breathing. So, I reasoned that if Albuterol can open lung passage ways, why couldn’t it open blocked Eustacian? Well, it does! One treatment will last for several days. The key is inhaling the mist as deeply as you can, then pinch your nose and try to blow your nose like you would normally try to clear your ears. Hold your breath as long as you can and do it as often as you can throughout the treatment (which only lasts for a few minutes). I am so thrilled to have my hearing back. It is wonderful to not ask people to repeat themselves or try to read lips. It’s also great to play music or the TV at a normal volume and catch all the nuances. Nebulizer machines are inexpensive and can be purchased without a prescription at a pharmacy or on the Internet. However, you will need a doctor’s prescription for the Albuterol solution. One prescription will provide a couple of dozen treatments. I hope this helps many of you who have found no other relief.
I have recurring difficulty with my left ear tube not opening easily due to many infections. This week I noticed my tinnitus (from the same ear) really extra loud. My left ear would not open with plugging my nose technique. My sinuses have been worse with extra pesticides being used in my workplace. I used some Cellfood drops (available where natural supplements are sold) and diluted with sterile water. My left ear opened within minutes. Tinnitus subsided a lot. But I am going to try garlic remedy and see how that works also.
