Bloating is a condition that is characterized by a general swelling of the abdominal area wherein the patient feels full and tight. In some instances, it may cause abdominal pain and is accompanied by borborygmus or the growling sound of the abdomen.
Bloating or gas, which is commonly known as flatulence, is not really harmful in themselves, except that they may cause annoyance especially when it is associated with pain.
Bloating Gas Causes
There are various causes of bloating, and the most common are the following:
- Overeating. The clinical term for overeating is gastric distension. In this case, the food taken in by the person may emit gases while being burned by the body, causing the growling sound that the abdomen makes.
- Bowel obstruction. When the food taken in cannot pass freely through the intestines, a blocking results, causing a person to feel full most of the time.
- Constipation. The inability to remove body waste at regular intervals can cause a prolonged feeling of being full.
Home Remedies for Bloating and Gas
Treatment of flatulence and bloating is commonly done though dietary intervention. Because the condition is brought about by food intake, the condition can likewise be remedied by limiting one’s intake. The following are the most common means to counter bloating and flatulence:
- The addition of certain spices on one’s diet. There are certain spices that are known to counter the production of gases in the body. The most common spices are cumin, coriander, and caraway.
- Avoid taking starchy foods. If one cannot totally do away with starchy foods, then it would be wise to limit their consumption. Foods such as noodles, potato, corn, and wheat are known to produce gases as they go along the intestinal tract.
