There are unavoidable circumstances where you accidentally struck your fingers with a heavy object. It would be very painful and it would usually result to the death of the nails especially if the force is very strong.
These are the following primary first aid treatment you can do to avoid losing the integrity of the nails and to lessen the discomfort:
- Place the affected fingernail in a bucket of ice cold water to help decrease the swelling.
- Let the affected area remain in the cold temperature for 5 to 10 minutes or as long as you can tolerate the cold. This would help reduce the swelling and the bleeding, which usually occurs below the nail bed giving you a bluish-black nails.
- If there is an injury and bleeding outside the nail, wash the area with running water and allow the wound to stop healing by putting pressure on the area.
- If there is a break in the skin and nails, place an antiseptic solution to decrease the risk of infection.
- Wrap or make a splint on the affected fingernail.
- If there damage to the fingers, there might be a possibility of fractured bones. It would be best to seek medical help.
