Causes of hair loss in men

Hair loss is the common sign amongst men today. Hence, it is important to understand what are the causes of this hair loss.

1.    Androgenetic alopecia

Loss of hair as a result of androgenic hormones, hence the hair follicles that normally produce coarse terminal hair give rise instead, to vellus hair.
The male type of alopecia has a typical pattern showing frontal recession of the hairline and thinning of the vertex.


This may progress to involve the entire scalp except the occipito-temporal region.

2.    Other common hair loss causes found in all human being

a. Alopecia areata

b. Tinea capitis

c. Lichen planopilaris

Lichen planus affecting hair follicles produce a patchy, scarring alopecia.
Minute, purple papules may be seen around hair follicles at the edges of the patches.

d. Folliculitis Decalvans

It is a rare cause with pustules around follicles which heal with scarring and destruction of hair follicles.

e. Skin diseases

Skin diseases that produce alopecia are discoid lupus erythematosus and morphoea.

f. Trichotillomania

It is seen in people with psychiatric illness of plucking hair.

g. Traction alopecia

It is produced by tying a tight pony tail. This is most prominent along hair margins because distant hair is subject to most traction.
