What is a Swedish Massage?

• Swedish massage was founded by Per Henrik Ling in the 1700’s.
• Primary purpose of Swedish massage is to increase the oxygen level in blood and flush toxins from the muscles.
• Swedish massage aims to relax muscles by applying indirect pressure against inner muscles and bones, while massaging the muscles in the direction of the flow of blood returning to the heart.
• Swedish massage is supposed to be the origin from which other types of massages, such as sports massage, deep tissue massage and aromatherapy have been developed. 

What is the technique of a Swedish Massage?

Swedish massage is done using a technique called “draping”. Initially the client is completely covered by a sheet. One part of the body is uncovered, massaged, and then covered up before moving on to another part of the body.

Therapists use massage oil as lubrication to make, smooth and long comfortable strokes over the body.

Swedish massage uses five different styles of strokes to achieve optimum benefits. These are:

• Effleurage which involves light touch long and gliding strokes to estimate muscle tension.
 
• Petrissage means kneading, rolling, lifting strokes to free up knotted muscles

• Tapotement involves rhythmic tapping with hands to stimulate nerves, muscles, circulation

• Friction comprises of a deep circular warming stroke to generate heat quickly and prepare for more deep tissue work.

• Vibration involves rocking and shaking movements to one limb or the entire body

Swedish massage is not advisable in following special cases

• Swedish massage is not advisable for anyone suffering from fever, jaundice, acute phlebitis, diarrhea, varicose veins, vomiting, bleeding, or thrombosis.
• In cases of heart problems or high blood pressure, it is recommended to avoid massage to the abdomen.
• Anyone with bruises or fractures should not massage the areas of injury.
• Pregnant women should consult their doctors before undergoing this massage therapy.
