What is a Massage Lotion?

Massaging the soft tissues, muscles, tendon needs to be done with utmost care. Hence, massage therapists need to use lubricants such as massage oil, massage lotion, massage cream or massage gel to enable their hands to glide smoothly over the skin while massaging, so that they are able to provide the best massage experience and benefits.

A massage lotion is generally made by blending one or more massage oils having their own respective nourishing, moisturizing, medicinal and therapeutic properties.

Massage lotions are considered a good alternative to massage oils because:

Massage lotions absorb more fully in the skin as compared to oil, and because they are non-greasy in nature, do not leave a greasy feeling on the skin. They have a thicker consistency, hence there are lower chances of spilling and easier to control and apply. Massage lotions not only help therapists slide their hands easily, but also give them a better grip while massaging; especially while administering deep tissue kind of massage. Massage lotions also nourish and condition the skin throughout the massage.

Several types of massage lotions are available from a wide range of manufacturers.  Massage lotions could be unscented, lightly scented or scented varieties.

There are also special varieties of hand massage lotions, foot care lotions, facial massage lotions which help to prevent, reduce stretch marks, keep the skin soft, supple and glowing.

Certain massage lotions are specifically created for deep tissue massage, neuromuscular massage techniques. Sports massage lotions are also widely available. They help relieve aches, pains, stiff joints, strained muscles etc.

Most massage lotions are prepared to suit all skin types hence may not cause any allergic reactions. However if some one has an extra sensitive skin there are also special hypoallergenic massage lotions which have little or no fragrance and do not cause any skin irritation.

You may choose to buy an off the shelf massage lotion or prefer to prepare your own massage lotion customized to suit your specific requirement.
