Bump on Lips

Bumps inside your mouth and other parts of your oral structure can be a part of your normal oral anatomy. However, there are tiny bumps on lipsand other parts of the mouth that signify diseases and need to be checked by a dentist or oral specialist for diagnosis.

According to oral experts, white bump on lips are normal oral structures found in 9 out 10 adults. Fordyce granules or those minor salivary gland openings or tiny whitish oil glands are harmless and should not be a cause of health alarm.

Most of these tiny glands are found on the upper lip and inner cheeks.

Causes of Bumps on Lips

Having red bump on lips is generally caused by minor cuts in the mucus duct cysts located in the inner lower part of the lip. These mucus duct cysts or mucoceles are tiny ducts that transport the mucus from the minor salivary glands in the lips to the upper part of the mouth. Because of trauma, these tiny ducts get cut resulting to the spilling of mucus into the tissues lining the mouth. This usually results to the development of soft and painless bumps.

Management of Bumps on Lips

If you have bumps on the lips, do not panic because bumps on the lips usually heal on their own without causing any potential risks. However, you should avoid picking on those bumps because it will lift the outer skin lining making your open skin exposed to viral and fungal infections. Picking on your bumps could also lead to the appearance of more mucoceles.

Although the bumps on lips are casual and not risky, you should consult an oral expert if the bumps get bigger and last longer than two weeks and if they start bleeding. You should also seek professional help if the bumps get painful.
