Intrauterine insemination (IUI) also called artificial insemination (AI) is a type of assisted reproductive technology (ART) where the donor or husband’s sperm is inserted to the female reproductive tract to aid pregnancy.
Indications Of IUI Treatment In Men And Women
- Low sperm count.
- Decreased sperm motility.
- Low sperm and semen quality, e.g. increased viscosity.
- Sperm malfunction/defects, e.g. anatomical defects.
- Problems on the penis, e.g. erectile dysfunction.
- Ejaculatory problems, e.g. premature ejaculation or retrograde ejaculation.
Indications Of Treatment In Women
- Too little mucus.
- Constant cervical or vaginal infection.
- Abnormal constriction of the cervical opening.
How Intrauterine Insemination Fertility Is Done?
- The woman is given medications that will stimulate the maturation of a number of egg cells.
- After about a week, the woman is given medications that will stimulate the ovaries to release the matured egg/s; supposed to be normal process called ovulation.
- The man is instructed to abstain from ejaculation 2 to 5 days before the date of the procedure.
- A semen specimen is collected in the laboratory through masturbation after 2 to 5 days of ejaculatory abstinence.
- The next step is called sperm washing or sperm processing where the sperm is separated from the semen. It takes about 30 to 60 minutes.
- The vagina and cervical area is cleaned.
- The highly motile sperm can be placed in the cervix or the uterus.
Factors Affecting Success Rate Of IUI Treatment
- Age of the woman.
- The kind of stimulation used for ovulation.
- How long the couple has been infertile.
- The cause of infertility.
- The quantity and quality of sperm.
Success Rates Of IUI Infertility Treatment
- For husband sperm, the success rate is 5% to 40%.
- For donor sperm, it is 40% to 70%.
However, to be considered failure or success, there should be at least six months of recorded ovulation and perfectly timed IUI.
