Infertility Treatment IUI: Indications Of IUI Treatment Men, Women

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) also called artificial insemination (AI) is a type of assisted reproductive technology (ART) where the donor or husband’s sperm is inserted to the female reproductive tract to aid pregnancy.

Indications Of IUI Treatment In Men And Women

• Low sperm count.
• Decreased sperm motility.
• Low sperm and semen quality, e.g. increased viscosity.
• Sperm malfunction/defects, e.g. anatomical defects.
• Problems on the penis, e.g. erectile dysfunction.
• Ejaculatory problems, e.g. premature ejaculation or retrograde ejaculation.

Indications Of Treatment In Women

• Too little mucus.
• Constant cervical or vaginal infection.
• Abnormal constriction of the cervical opening.

How Intrauterine Insemination Fertility Is Done?

1. The woman is given medications that will stimulate the maturation of a number of egg cells.
2. After about a week, the woman is given medications that will stimulate the ovaries to release the matured egg/s; supposed to be normal process called ovulation.
3. The man is instructed to abstain from ejaculation 2 to 5 days before the date of the procedure.
4. A semen specimen is collected in the laboratory through masturbation after 2 to 5 days of ejaculatory abstinence.
5. The next step is called sperm washing or sperm processing where the sperm is separated from the semen. It takes about 30 to 60 minutes.
6. The vagina and cervical area is cleaned.
7. The highly motile sperm can be placed in the cervix or the uterus.

Factors Affecting Success Rate Of IUI Treatment

• Age of the woman.
• The kind of stimulation used for ovulation.
• How long the couple has been infertile.
• The cause of infertility.
• The quantity and quality of sperm.

Success Rates Of IUI Infertility Treatment

• For husband sperm, the success rate is 5% to 40%.
• For donor sperm, it is 40% to 70%.

However, to be considered failure or success, there should be at least six months of recorded ovulation and perfectly timed IUI.
