Women are 8 times more prone to thyroid disorders as compared to men.
What is Goiter?
An enlargement or a swelling of the thyroid gland is called goitre. The most common cause is a deficiency of iodine. When the iodine level in the diet, and in the blood, falls, the cells in the thyroid gland start enlarging, and eventually, the entire gland swells up.
Goiter invariably strikes during phases of physiological stress. For e.g. in women, it most often occurs during menarche or puberty, during pregnancy, and at menopause. In males, other forms of physical strain and stress bring on the disorder.
Symptoms of Goiter:
- The thyroid gland may swell, but this has no relation to the severity of the disease.
- Emotional upsets and mood swings are common. Initially, they pass un-noticed, and then gradually, there occurs an increase in the frequency and duration.
- There is a rapid heart beat, and least excitement increases the pulse rate.
- Fatigue
- Occasional tremors of the hands.
- An alarming symptom in patients, who suffer from hyperthyroidism, is a rapid weight loss.
- On the other hand, patients with hypothyroidism show a considerable weight gain.
Preventing Goiter:
- Cabbage family vegetables (cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, radish, turnip, and Brussels sprouts) contain certain compounds called goitrogens. These compounds can interfere with the thyroid hormone action in certain situations, primarily, when iodine levels are low.Cooking may inactivate the goitrogenic compounds.
Managing Goiter:
- Plenty of rest, both physical and mental, is strongly recommended. Do not over work yourself.
- Ensure that there is good bowel movement. Check the occurrence of constipation.
- All efforts should be made to battle stress. Stress busting is extremely crucial in the treatment of thyroid disorders. Handle emotional disturbances tactfully.
Foods for Goiter:
- Foods rich in iodine should be taken liberally. Step up the intake of – carrots, garlic, onion, oats, tomatoes, strawberries, whole grains, and sea food.
- Always consume, only, iodized salt.
- Stay away from refined foods – white flour, white sugar, packed and processed food products.
- Beverages like tea, coffee, alcohol, and aerated drinks should be avoided.
- Let fresh fruits and vegetables, be the mainstay of your diet.
- Also, it is important to bear in mind that the treatment and management of goitre is a slow process. Swift and rapid results do not occur. It is recommended that the diet prescriptions and the guidelines that are drawn out, be followed assiduously for 1 year. Gradually the symptoms will become less pronounced, in frequency and in intensity, but there could be episodes of recurrences.
