Teeth Polishing, Whitening Side Effects | Tips for Healthy Teeth and Gums

Dental Polishing Side-Effects:

A new study has raised doubts on the effectiveness and usefulness of dental care products. They have suggested that polishing the teeth may be harmful, since it may result in wearing of the enamel of the tooth and dentin.
Dentists offer professional services, to remove discoloration and plaques, off the teeth, using abrasive prophylactic tooth pastes. The result, most definitely, is beautiful and smooth teeth surface, and the procedure also makes it very difficult for harmful bacteria to get a foot hold and multiply.

However, such procedures may destroy the precious enamel of the tooth.
Up till now, scientists did not have a standardized technique to measure the extent of tooth abrasion caused by chewing and the use of tooth pastes.
The research, was led by, Dr. Jaeger, who heads the Department of Biomedical Materials and Implants.  The experts have discovered that some tooth pastes and polishes, cause unnecessary abrasion to the tooth enamel, resulting in formation of grooves on the surface of the tooth.

The ideal tooth paste is the one that polishes the tooth very lightly, so as to eliminate only roughness on its surface, while leaving the tooth enamel untouched.
Dr. Jaeger stated that, normally, a gentle prophylactic paste should suffice, except in certain cases where there is heavy plaque and excessive tooth discoloration.
