Lycopene and Prostate Cancer | Lycopene Supplements for Cancer Protection

Lycopene and Cancer:

In one of the more detailed studies, Harvard researchers have discovered that men who consumed high levels of lycopene (an anti-oxidant found in tomatoes), showed a 21 % reduced risk of developing prostate cancer, compared to those eating lower amounts of the fruit. Men, who ate 2 or more servings of tomato sauce each week, were 23 % less likely to develop prostate cancer, during the 22 years of the clinical study, than those subjects who ate less than 1 serving of tomato sauce in a week.

In another study, lycopene supplements were given to individuals who were already suffering from prostate cancer. The results showed slower tumor growth, shrinkage of the tumor, and lower levels of PSA (prostate specific antigen, a tumor marker for prostate cancer, showing cancer activity) by 18 %.
Lycopene is extremely protective against cancer, especially, cancer of the breast, colon, lung, skin, and prostate. Lycopene helps avert the development of cancers by neutralizing the harmful effects oxygen free radicals before they can damage cellular structures.
