Plastic Side Effects on Brain | Plastic Harmful Health Hazards

Plastic Health Effects:

Researchers in Canada have found that plastic bottles are prepared using a chemical compound called “Bisphenol A” (BPA), which is responsible for damaging brain functions, namely abilities to learn and remember. The researchers further added that, ‘Bisphenol A’ could be the factor that could be behind several chronic and devastating mental conditions like depression, schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s disease. Bisphenol A is used across the globe to prepare plastic water bottles, food containers and baby food bottles.

The research conducted at the Guelph University of Canada found that Bisphenol A has the ability to leak into solid or liquid food stored in the plastic container. On consumption of these liquids and foods, the chemical gains access to the human system, where it affects the neurons of the brain which are vital for functions like learning, cognition and remembering. The lead researcher, Neil MacLusky emphasized that low doses of Bisphenol A impairs the formation of synapses in the human brain, which are linked to learning.
The study was conducted on African green monkeys who were fed with low levels of BPA for a month, after which it was observed that the synapses in the monkey’s brain were disrupted. This process was linked to the hormone Oestrogen, which is essential for the formation and maintenance of neuronal structure in the region of the brain, which controlled mood states, memory and learning. Another study conducted by a Non Profit Environmental Working group in the United States, observed that the levels of fire retardant chemical used in electronics, toys and furniture were three times higher among children in comparison to their mothers.
This PBDE, a hormone disrupting chemical which has the ability to affect the brain functions, was found in higher concentration among children, who were in constant contact with materials made out of the chemical.
