Long-term risk of sustained hypertension in white-coat hypertension

White-coat hypertension (WCH) or white coat syndrome is an occurrence, wherein patients exhibit high levels of blood pressure in presence of a physician/ clinical setting (hence the term) but not in any other settings.

This happens primarily due to the anxiety some people experience during a visit to the physician. (American heart association, Inc.) It is debated that individuals showing WCH are at a greater risk of developing a sustained hypertensive state. In the study, the office blood pressure, 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure and the blood pressure at home of a white-coat hypertensive individual was recorded and, that was compared with normotensive individuals. Conclusions made were, that white coat hypertensives were at a much higher risk of developing sustained hypertension and the prognosis was poorer.
