Hair Extensions – Damage and Effects on Hair | Diet, Tips for Healthy Hair
Hair Extension Side-Effects:
Dermatologists have warned that hair extensions could make a woman go bald.
A joint team of experts from American and Italian universities, have found that hair extension and hair pieces, which are added on, or attached to the real hair, using glue, put excessive tension on the hair roots, and can consequently lead to thinning of hair, and cause permanent bald spots.
The research was conducted by the university of Miami, Florida, and Bologna University in Italy.
They have stated that these hair extensions cause the hair follicles to get unduly inflamed and fall out. Medically, this is called traction alopecia.
The damage caused is irreversible.
Early Detection:
- A regular visit to the trichologist could help in the early detection of trouble and prompt action can be taken to protect your tresses.
- Video-micro-scoping, is a technique that is used by hair specialists, where in, the hair follicles and the scalp gets magnified up to 200 times, and assists in the early detection of thinning.
- This method of hair testing can foretell the possibility of hair loss many years before the occurrence.
- Early detection improves the success rate of the treatment.
Diet for long and healthy hair:
- Milk and its products (yogurt, cottage cheese, and buttermilk) are considered super hair foods. Consume at least 2 servings per day for luxuriant hair.
- A combination of lettuce juice and alfalfa juice works wonders for the hair. Taken daily, hair growth is stimulated to a remarkable extent.
Cosmetic tips:
- A very effective home remedy for hair loss or thinning of hair is to apply coconut oil to which the juice of 1 lime has been added. This mixture of coconut oil and lime juice prevents hair loss and strengthens them.
- A daily application for a time period of 3 months is necessary.
Beware!:
- Avoid any kind of chemical treatments to the hair. Treatments like hair straightening, perming, and coloring have a deleterious affect on the hair and the scalp. Hair roots are damaged, causing poor hair growth, and the new hair is brittle and unhealthy.
- Also avoid using to many styling products like sprays and mousse.
- Tying the hair in to tight pigtails, and using tight hair bands and clips is not recommended.

- Stress can play havoc with your hair. Our hair is the first casualty and the foremost to be affected by the brutal onslaught of stress.
Tips to ease stress and stimulate increased blood flow to the scalp:
- Gently massage the nape of the neck, using soft, circular strokes.
- Begin at the shoulder blades and gradually move upwards towards the base of the head.
- You could use any essential oil that helps you de-stress and unwind. Add a drop of the aroma essential oil to base oil, and gently massage yourself for 10 minutes.
- This technique melts away stiffness and tension knots in the muscles and enhances the blood supply to the scalp and hair root. Thus the hair follicles receive increased amounts of nutrients and oxygen, promoting better growth.
- Use this therapy at least once a week for optimum benefits.
