Pectin:
- Pectin is found in plant cell walls.
- Rich sources are citrus rind, apple, and onion skin
- Outer skin and rind of fruits and vegetables
Benefits of Pectin:
- It binds cholesterol and bile acids, and aid in their excretion, thus lowering cholesterol.
- Delays gastric emptying
- Chelates out heavy, toxic metals out of the body
- Modified citrus pectin, is a complex sugar, obtained from the peel and pulp of citrus fruits.
- It reduces the risk of metastasis (spread of cancer cells to other sites in the body). For metastasis to occur, cancer cells have to clump together. Galectins appear on the surface and bind the cells to glucose.
- Research states that modified citrus pectin binds to the galectins, and blocks the ability of the cancer cells to spread.
Diet for Cancer:
- Soy: Increasing the intake of soy foods has a beneficial effect in cancer patients. An exception is, women who have estrogen-sensitive breast cancer. Isoflavanoids, present in soy prevent the formation of new blood vessels, thus preventing the tumor cells from getting a blood supply necessary for their propagation. Soy beans, soy milk, soy curd, soy cheese, soy desserts, and tofu are recommended.
- Whey: Whey protein is a complete protein. It has all the essential and non-essential amino acids. Glutamine, an amino acid, in whey is very important. It boosts the immune system and fights infections.
- Fluids: It is absolutely essential to maintain good hydration. Especially those on to chemotherapy. Fluid is needed to remove the metabolic by-products of the fight against cancer and debris from dead cells. Sip water and fluids every half an hour. Avoid consuming too much at one time, since that can cause nausea. Stay away from coffee and alcohol. Herbal teas, juicy fruits, and soups are advocated.
