Moon Phases and Epilepsy | Diet, Causes, Treatments for Epilepsy
Epilepsy and Moon Phases:
Scientists at the University College, London, have studied a number of patients suffering from epilepsy, and the clinical trials have revealed that the epileptic seizures reduced when the moon was at its brightest.
For the research, the experts examined the record of seizures in an epilepsy unit, where, every seizure in a 24 hour period is recorded for the patients.
They compared the timing of the seizures with the moon’s brightness.
The upshot was, that during the waxing periods of the moon (during the brighter phases of the moon’s cycle), there were lesser number of epileptic seizures, as compared to the waning periods.
Lead researcher, Sallie Baxendale of University London College, stated that the trials have clearly demonstrated that there occured fewer epileptic attacks when the moon was fuller.
The scientists say, that the effect of the melatonin hormone, which is secreted only at night and in the dark, may be implicated in the epileptic attacks.
What is Epilepsy?
An epileptic seizure is a transient abnormal event, occurring due to a paroxysmal discharge of the cerebral neurons.
Causes of Epilepsy:
- A genetic predisposition or hereditary factors that bring on an attack.
- Developmental defects (present at birth) within the brain or neurons
- Trauma or injury to the head / brain
- An intracranial (within the cranium or the skull) lesion
- Metabolic defects such as – low calcium levels, low sodium levels, and low blood sugar levels
- Triggering factors
- Flashing lights or a flickering television screen
- Loud music
Diet for Epilepsy:
- Grapes: Grapes are particularly effective in the management and control of epileptic attacks.A consumption of 500 to 700 grams of the fruit or 500 ml juice shows significant benefits. It should be taken for a period of 3 months regularly. Frequency and intensity of attacks greatly diminish.
- Fresh vegetable juices: A combination of carrot juice, beet root juice and cucumber juice helps treat epilepsy. These vegetables provide trace vitamins and minerals which are highly effective in combating epilepsy.
- Holy basil: Chew 5 basil leaves daily. It has a beneficial effect on epileptics. Also, in case of an attack of epilepsy, if the patient falls unconscious, an inhalation of the juice of basil leaves helps him come around quickly.
- Vitamin B6: Vitamin B6 is responsible for the optimal functioning of the central nervous system. A therapeutic dose of 100 to 150 mg daily staves off an attack. Rich food sources are – whole cereals, milk, pulses, green leafy vegetables, and brewer’s yeast.
Homoeopathy for Epilepsy:
Bufo Rana:
- This homoeopathic remedy has a marked action on the nervous system. It is especially indicated in epileptic spasms and convulsive seizures that come on in the night and during sleep. Lower potencies are recommended.
- A detailed case taking, with respect to number of epileptic episodes, probable causes, family history, medications taken, and nutritional status, is an important determining factor, before prescribing a homoeopathic medicine.
- Reflexology treatment that helps in an emergency, and which will abate a convulsive attack.
- Press both the ear lobes gently. This reflexology / acupressure point brings about instant relief, and reduces the intensity and duration of a convulsive episode. The point has to be pressed for 1 minute before beneficial results are seen.
