Bach Flower Remedy for Depression | Diet, Nutrition to Treat Depression
Diet and Depression:
Altered mood is a characteristic of mental depression and is associated with loss of interest in most of the pleasurable outlets such as friends, sex, food, work, or other forms of entertainment. A study, conducted in the 1990, examined the suicide rates of 16 Western European countries to conclude that there was a strong association between the suicide rates and the average intake of fat, especially from animal products.
As per reports, a diet is balanced when it contains an appropriate combination of proteins and complex carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates raise the level of “tryptophan”, which has a calming effect on the brain. Hence, for nervous people, high consumption of carbohydrates in comparison to proteins helps them relax, while higher content of protein is recommended when one feels tired and wants to be more alert.
Furthermore a different set of studies have shown that drinking more than 700 mg of caffeine each day or consuming large amounts of refined sugars can also make you feel depressed. The studies critically examined and concluded that cutting caffeine and sugar for as little as once a week would alleviate the symptoms related to depression.
These set of studies clearly emphasized that poor eating practices can cause depression by failing to provide essential nutrients for effective and proper functioning of the brain. One of the most common deficiencies associated with depression is that of B complex vitamins, which act as powerful mood regulators.
