Alzheimer’s Disease Treatments, Causes, Diet | Keep Brain Alert
Alzheimer’s Disease:
Research says; take up a challenging and a mentally stimulating job to keep off Alzheimer’s.
Clinical trials have shown that people who are occupied by mentally demanding and taxing professions, are less likely to witness the symptoms of Alzheimer’s.
Valentine Garibotto of San Raffaele University in Milan, says, a mentally testing job, acts as a buffer, staving off the harsh effects of dementia/Alzheimer’s on the brain.
What is Alzheimer’s Disease (AD)?
Alzheimer’s is a degenerative brain disorder that is characterized by a progressive deterioration of memory and mental function.
A reduction of an important neurotransmitter (acetylcholine) in the brain, is the main pathogenic causative factor for the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Acetylcholine is necessary for memory and recall.
Symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease:
- Loss of memory and forgetfulness
- Reduction in cognitive functions
- Inability to carry out the usual, daily activities
- Progressive mental deterioration
Causes of Alzheimer’s disease:
- A genetic predisposition for the disease.
- Traumatic injury to the head
- Chronic exposure to toxins in the environment
- Oxidative damage to the brain
- Techniques to keep your brain alert, active, and agile
- Mental activity is the key to keeping your brain agile.Challenge yourself by learning new skills. Consequently, the brain does not stagnate, but continues to grow. An active and sharp brain produces new connections between nerve cells, that, help the cells communicate with one another. This facilitates the brain to receive, process, analyze, and store information easily, no matter, what the age.
- Play a game of Scrabble, or Pictionary, or solve crossword puzzles daily. It helps you think better.
- Reading is very important. It gives a tremendous boost to the brain’s functioning capacity and maintains memory for longer, as you age.
- Adopt a new hobby every once in a while. It could be anything, learn a new craft, or an art, music, learning a foreign language, pottery, or gardening.
- Interact with maximum number of people.
- Sign up for a social cause
- Be aware of what’s going on in the world.
Diet for Alzheimer’s Disease:
- The mental function of an individual is directly related to his nutritional status. A deficiency of folic acid and vitamin B12, in particular, is linked to Alzheimer’s. Augment the dietary intake of green leafy vegetables, milk, yogurt, green peas, tomatoes, and eggs.
- A lack of omega 3 fatty acids is also a known cause for alzheimer’s disease. Step up your intake of fish oils, green leafy vegetables and walnuts. These halt the onslaught of dementia.
- Foods rich in carotenes protect the brain from oxidative damage. Rich sources of carotenes are – tomatoes, bell peppers, papaya, melon, pumpkin, and green leafy vegetables.
Staying physically fit is crucial to putting off dementia:
- Research has found a strong association between poor physical health and quick mental decline. Exercise increases the blood flow to various parts of the body, including the brain. Exercise energizes you and gives the entire body system a boost. 20 to 30 minutes of exercise everyday is recommended.

Great list of things to do to fight off dementia, or at least help thwart the affects of dementia. One thing I might add is that physical exercise has actually been shown to grow new brain cells, in addition to the other benefits you listed.
