The tailbone is the last segment of the spinal cord. It contains five segments that are held in place by joints and ligaments.

- One common home treatment for bruised tailbone is to apply an ice pack on the area for 20 minutes. Repeat the procedure every 4 hours. Doing so will reduce the swelling of the tailbone while reducing pain.
- A variation of this treatment first involves application of ice on to the tailbone area followed by a heat pack and massage.On the other hand, you can also try to reveres the procedure, going with the heat pack first and finishing off with the ice pack.
- Physical therapy and exercises will also help in the healing of bruised tailbone. One such exercise is to lie down on one’s back. Keep one leg straight while gently raising the other leg, crossing it across the length of your body.
- Gentle walking, such as the pace one makes when walking around the park, will keep you fit and facilitate faster healing of bruised tailbone. However, make sure to avoid more rigorous exercises such as biking, running and swimming.
- Another treatment means is to wear loose and comfortable clothing. Avoid wearing jeans and bulky pants that will increase the pressure on the tailbone area, causing you more pain and discomfort.
- When sitting or sleeping, make sure to be comfortable all the time. If the chair has a hard surface, place some cushion such as a pillow between your butt and the seat.
