Somatic Experiencing Therapy

Somatic Experiencing is a therapy that resolves and relieves symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder, and mental and physical trauma; and focuses on the patient’s somatic experiences or body sensations.
It is a one on one session, where the patient gauges experiences they have felt-sensed. Felt-sense experiencing is concerned with the emotions that your body feels before you have words for the emotions. The patient needs to track the experiences that they have felt-sensed, and this helps him understand how his body reacts to various circumstances and also comprehend his emotions.

Felt-sensing helps understand survival responses, i.e.,

1. Fight: fighting emotions related to the trauma
2. Flight: fleeing from emotions linked to the trauma
3. Freeze: having no reaction to the emotions linked to the trauma

Somatic Experiencing Training

Somatic experiencing therapy handles 2 kinds of trauma:

1. Developmental trauma: is psychological trauma when the child fails to get adequate nurturing / love.
2. Shock trauma: an event like an accident, or death, etc.

Relief from the symptoms takes about 6 sessions of somatic experiencing therapy. Somatic experiencing is a wonderful treatment option that helps heal symptoms of trauma.

It resolves problems associated with the trauma and helps the patient understand body’s communication techniques and how to respond to the communication.

Somatic Experiencing Exercises

Somatic Experiencing makes you conscious and releases stress and tension that remains in the body after the trauma.

Exercise technique comprise of:  Titration of the patient’s experience. Another technique is Pendulation. The therapist helps the patient move to a state where he is believed to be deregulated, he then helps him return to a state of regulation.
