Coenzyme Q10 Deficiency
Coenzyme Q10 is an antioxidant and a cofactor for enzymes which plays an important role in the production of cellular energy. Coenzyme Q10 is found in high concentration in the liver and the heart and is synthesized in the body.
Coenzyme Q10 deficiency may arise due to impaired biosynthesis of the component, excessive utilization by the body or insufficient dietary intake. Further, with advancing age, the body’s uptake of coenzyme Q10 tends to deplete which reduces the body’s ability to manufacture adequate quantities of coenzyme Q10, which in turn results in deficiency.
Coenzyme Q10 is a fat soluble component and as per clinical trial studies conducted over the past two decades, the basic requirement of coenzyme Q10 is of the tune of 30-45 mg per day.
Coenzyme Q10 Deficiency Symptoms
Deficiency of coenzyme Q10 can be associated with a wide range of symptoms.
- Obesity and inability to loss weight: Coenzyme Q10 plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism and its deficiency may be associated with increase in weight and fat deposition in the body.Further obesity itself may be associated with increased risk of developing cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, arthritis, etc
- A strong association has been observed in the occurrence of periodontal disease and the deficiency of coenzyme Q10
- Deficiency of coenzyme Q10 results in limited oxidation of LDL, which in turn increases the risk of atherosclerosis and plaque formation, which contribute to hypertension and cardiac disorders
CoQ10 Deficiency Test and Treatment
Use of coenzyme Q10 supplements or ensures a adequate dietary intake of the same is the most effective treatment for management of the deficiency disorder. Evidence has suggested, that intake of 30-45mg per day of the coenzyme is adequate in adults.
