Most people get far more sodium (salt) than they need. Our body needs only 500 mg of salt per day.

For some people, excess of salt causes high blood pressure. If you are not sodium sensitive salt may not be a problem for you.

Salt is the most familiar source of sodium. About 50 percent of salt is pure sodium. Sodium is also hidden in foods and some time it does not taste salty such as in cheddar cheese and processed foods.

Excess of salt can be termed as hypernatraemia, it is defined as blood sodium in excess of 145mEq/L.

Salt poisoning is nothing but hypetnatraemia and may be due to primary sodium gain or water deficit.

Salt Poisoning Symptoms

  • Altered mental status. Lethargy, stupor and coma.
  • Twitching of muscles.
  • Seizures.
  • Patient may complain of thirst.
  • Tremor.
  • With dehydration can cause hypotension and rapid pulse.
  • Dry mouth.

Symptoms Of Salt Poisoning In Children

  • Restlessness
  • Muscle weakness
  • High pitched crying.
  • Convulsion.
  • Less sleep.

Some time excess salt may be sensitive and allergic and can cause skin allergies and hypertension and edema in few individuals.

Salt Sensitive Food Diet

  • Beware of ready mixed sauces and seasoning, frozen dinners, canned foods, which are usually packed with sodium.
  • Eat lots of fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables.
  • Do not keep salt shaker on the dining table or anywhere you dine.
  • Always measure salt in recipes and use half of mentioned in it.
