What Is Xanthelasma?

Xanthelasma are noncancerous skin patches that usually appear outside the upper eyelid or near the nose. They are commonly flat, elliptical, and yellowish and appear to be stretched along the edges.

Causes Of Xanthelasma

Xanthelasma causes include any of the following:

  • High cholesterol level
  • Lipid disorder such as excessive lipids in the blood
  • Genetic factors

Removal Of Xanthelasma

Xanthelasma are usually painless blemishes composed of fatty material. It usually disappears over time with clinical help, but it can persist and require xanthelasma removal, which includes freezing the blemishes with liquid nitrogen to kill the fatty formations outside the eyelids.

The process can be performed in a dermatologist’s clinic or in a physician’s office. A sample of the removed fatty particles will then be subjected to laboratory test for further examinations.

Treatment For Xanthelasma

Natural treatment for xanthelasma includes the following:

  • Lowering down your cholesterol level as soon as possible to prevent serious conditions such as cardiac arrest.
  • Reduction of excess fat and weight through regular exercise. A minimum of 30-minute walk or jog every day can largely reduce your excess weight.
  • Have a healthy and proper diet. This involves avoidance of fatty foods and those that can be readily ordered from fast food chains as they are usually salty, greasy and generally unhealthy.
Go for fresh fruits and vegetables instead.

Practice a healthy lifestyle and avoid being idle. If your work requires you to stay in front of the computer or behind your office desk for most of the day, stretch in between hours. You can also choose the stairs instead of the elevator.
