Thimerosal in Vaccines Side Effects
Thimerosal is a preservative used in vaccines. The use of preservative will enable the vaccine to last more, and the vaccine will sustain its strength and potency. Unfortunately it has been found that thimerosal contains ethyl mercury, an organic form of mercury, which is toxic in nature. This makes thimerosal a health hazard.
Mercury is known to cause damage to the DNA chain, cell death of the tissue, damage to the brain neurons and kidney and liver failure.
Recent studies done in America conclude that rise in Autism may be due to mercury in thimerosal.
The rise in autism in children is due to increase in number of vaccination. And if the vaccines contain thimerosal, the proportion of mercury will be higher than previously it used to be, due to lesser number of vaccines.
Therefore in many states in USA, vaccinations free of thimerosal have been made mandatory.
Given a choice or if there is availability of mercury free vaccine, it should be preferred.
Allergy Symptoms of Thimerosal
- Bump with a red spot like a mosquito bite at the site of injection.
- Itching for few minutes at the site of vaccination containing thimerosal.
- Rarely systemic reactions of anaphylactic shock and angio-edema may be present. Emergency measure should be taken in such situation.

A skin bubble/blister is a common side effect of the TB shot because of the tuberculosis, not the thimerosal. It is your body fighting the TB virus that causes the bubble. When you got the shot they should have told you this. So if your bump is more bubbly than bitey, it’s probably the normal reaction. You can always call your pediatrician to make sure you are safe to be around your baby after being vaccinated.
