Burping is a reflex that expels gas noisily from the stomach through the mouth. Continuous burping is not a disease in itself, although it makes a person much more uncomfortable when in public.

Burping is caused due to swallowing of air in the gastrointestinal tract. Burping is the natural way of the body to expel the air which we have swallowed.

Causes of Continuous Burping

  • Excessive swallowed air while drinking liquids, or while eating and chewing can cause continuous burping.
  • Eating foods which produce gas and which is not easily digested such as cabbage, lentils and beans.
  • Drinking carbonated beverages.
  • In case of lactose intolerance, certain foods are not digested causing gases which are eliminated through the air way.
  • Gas in the intestine is produced by bacteria while acting on the food. If the patient is having alternate constipation and diarrhea, he might be probably suffering from irritable bowel syndrome. In this condition the patient may have continuous burping.
  • Milk, alcohol and chocolate might aggravate the condition of IBS. Therefore it should be avoided if there is continuous burping.

Treatment for Continuous Burping

  • Avoid carbonated drinks such as sodas.
  • Eat small portions during meals and dinner.
  • Do not chew gum. It increases the air flow in the body.
  • Ginger provides relief from continuous burping. Drink ginger tea after every meal.
  • Digestive enzymes also help to control continuous burping.
  • Eating few grains of cardamom can bring fast relief in continuous burping.
