Have you had white spots at the back of your throat? Sometimes it’s just benign and negligible, but other times it can be really painful. The condition, whatever the degree, is of great concern, the throat being a food passage. If it’s aching down there, your appetite is surely affected.

Causes Of White Spots On The Throat

Don’t neglect these white spots on back of throat, especially if accompanied by pain, high fever, swollen lymph glands, and joint pains. So what causes white spots on the back of the throat?

  • Bacterial infections, usually strep throat, further indicated by red, scratchy throat, fever, and swollen lymph glands
  • Tonsil stones, often accompanied by bad breath and difficulty swallowing
  • Chewing aspirin frequently, instead of swallowing it.
    The white spots then look like burns.

  • STDs like syphilis infection, candidiasis, and herpes. Further indications of syphilis are the occurrence of rashes, malaise, joint pains, and sores on body parts that had sexual contact. Candidiasis is the root cause if the spots originated on the tongue or palate. Herpes spots are blisters that will burst later on.
  • Leukoplakia. This occurs if you smoke or chew tobacco, and it may lead to cancer.

Treatment For White Spots On Back Of Throat

  • For bacterial infections like strep throat, your doctor will prescribe antibiotics.
  • You can usually remove tonsil stones yourself, with a clean finger or cotton buds.
  • Lichen planus doesn’t need treatment if it’s not painful. If it is, consult your doctor.
  • Syphilis infections are treated with antibiotics.
  • Candidiasis is eliminated with anti-fungal drugs.
  • Anti-viral medication will alleviate throat symptoms of herpes, but not cure the disease itself. So to keep white spots on back of throat from recurring, drink lots of water and keep the air passage clear.
