Sun poisoning is a form of allergic reaction to the sun and manifests as rash. Affected population includes those with white skin primarily because of the lack of melanin, a brown-colored pigment that protects the skin from UV rays. It can happen to anyone with a good supply of melanin though.
How Do We Get Sun Poisoning Rash
Here are its causes:
- Sunburn: the most common cause. Excessive exposure to the sun causes an allergic reaction manifested by sun poisoning rash.
- Birth control pills
- Tranquilizers
- Blood pressure medications
- Tetracycline
- Medicines for diabetes and other ailments
On contrary to the common cause, even most simple medications can also cause skin poisoning rash.
Sun Poisoning Rash Symptoms
Symptoms of sun poisoning include the following:
- Red skin rash
- Itching of the skin
- Peeling
- Pain and tenderness on the skin
- Very small to large blisters will surface
- Fever
- Nausea and vomiting
- Headache
- Chills
- Fatigue
- Dizziness
- Flu-like symptoms
- Thirst
- Other signs of electrolyte imbalance
How to Prevent Sun Poisoning Rash
Avoiding what causes sun poisoning is apparently the only way to prevent it.
- Avoid exposing yourself to excessive sunlight especially between nine in the morning to three in the afternoon.
- Wear or use sun protective gadgets such as umbrella or hat, long sleeves, lotions with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 20 or more.
- Avoid skin damaging activities such as sunbathing or use of tanning beds.
Treatment for Sun Poisoning Rash
Sun poisoning rash treatment is the same as with any other rash:
- Apply cold compress the affected area
- Pat Aloe Vera gel to the rash
- Cool baths or showers
- Wrap the blisters with sterile bandage to prevent infection
- Medicate with over-the-counter pain relievers
- Apply calamine lotion if there is itching
- Take vitamin supplements
- If the symptoms do not disappear, consult a doctor immediately.
