Symptoms of Bladder Stones in Men and Women

First let us discuss the gallbladder for us to have a better view on how it affects our body when bladder stones start to form. The gallbladder is a muscular organ that serves as a reservoir for bile. It is a pear-shaped membranous sac on the under surface of the right lobe of the liver just below the ribs. The gallbladder functions by releasing bile through the biliary ducts into the duodenum to aid digestion by promoting peristalsis and absorption preventing emulsification and putrefaction of fat.

To enumerate the symptoms of gallbladder stones in men and women, they are the following:

  • Colic pain, also known as biliary colic. This is an extreme pain in the upper right side of the abdomen, which is caused by a stone that is pushed from the gallbladder to the bile duct that causes obstruction and is then manifested by pain.
  • Abdominal distention
  • Decreased appetite
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Flatulence
  • Low grade fever

Two Types of Bladder Stones in Men and Women:

  • Pigment stones. These are small dark stones that are made of excessive bilirubin and calcium salts found in the bile.
  • Cholesterol stones. These are more common. These stones are formed when there are excessive amounts of fat in the bile.

Causes of Bladder Stones in Men and Women

  • Obesity. This decreases the salt in the bile causing increase in cholesterol.
  • Diabetes. When a person has diabetes, the fatty acid called triglycerides is increased.
  • Estrogen. Excess estrogen from birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy increases cholesterol in the bile while decreasing gallbladder movement.
  • Fasting. Gallbladder movement is decreased during fasting causing the bile to be oversaturated with cholesterol.

Home Remedies for Gallbladder Stones

  • Apple juice: done for three consecutive days. On the second day, add freshly squeezed lemons and olive oil.
  • Coffee: drinking at least 2-3 cups a day can help. Caffeine prevents gallstone formation.
  • Fruits and vegetables: they contain high water-soluble fiber that flushes cholesterol.
