Question:
Every time I drink alcohol, the next morning I wake up to very puffy eyes, which are red, itchy and wrinkled. At one point, my entire face swelled from my nose to my forehead. Does this have something to do with my lymphatic system? or the need to remove toxins?
Answer:
Alcohol and Puffiness
How often do you drink alcohol? How old are you?
Remember that a puffy face is a sign of excessive alcohol consumption. Your body is indicating to you to reduce the consumption of alcohol. There are several reasons why alcohol causes puffiness of face,
- Alcohol acts as a diuretic, which means that you will increase your urine output, which in turn may result in dehydration.
- Under normal conditions, dehydration causes the body to compensate for loss of water by retaining water which in turn is evident from puffiness of the face.
- Further, dehydration causes the blood vessels to enlarge which further results in puffiness of the face.
- As a result of consumption of alcohol, the body’s immune response is accelerated which results in inflammation. Inflammation is another cause for tissue swelling around the face.
- Alcohol is a stimulant and it causes reduced sleep and drowsiness. This makes you feel tired with heaviness in the head and also increases the puffiness of the face and under eyes.
The only detoxification that you need is ‘stopping the consumption of alcohol’. Try slowly cutting down on it if you are a chronic drinker or seek medical advice to help you quit alcohol.
