Natural Remedies for Dry Scalp Itching | Treatments for Itchy Scalp
Causes, Treatments for Dry Scalp Itching:
Dryness of scalp and itching is due to two reasons- primary reason is loss of water and secondary reason is loss of oil from the skin. Loss of both oil and water is a matter of concern as it may be an indication of a serious underlying problem; as in case of deficiency of essential fatty acid. The scalp is overly dry and there is a tendency to chafing more so in winter and itching.
Preventing Dry Scalp Itching:
- Sufficient amount of water should be taken for hydration of the skin and scalp. One can apply little amount of olive oil throughout the body and scalp after bathing. Do not apply commercial oils and hair styling gels as they are absorbed by the scalp and may cause further dryness.Avoid too much of sunlight.
- Stoop using coffee and alcohol. Both are diuretic which reduces water from the body. Smoking or breathing smoke makes scalp and skin dry, leathery and wrinkled.
- Eat nutritious diet of vegetables, fruits, grains, seeds, legumes and nuts. Avoid animal fats, hydrogenated oils and fried food. Use no sugar, chocolate, junk food, alcohol or caffeine.
- Cut out all greases and other saturated fatty acids.
- Do not use safflower oil, hardened (solid) vegetable oil (margarine or butter) or animal fat.
Home Remedies for Dry Scalp Itching:
- The solution to this problem is not external application of the oil but obtaining enough unsaturated fatty acids in the diet. Each meal should contain at least one teaspoon to one tablespoon of raw, fresh, cold-pressed wheat germ oil or flaxseed oil at each meal.
- Other important source of essential fatty acid is fish (unfortunately most of which are found in polluted water; the best source remains flaxseed oil and walnut oil).
- Other sources are legumes, seeds and raw nuts and vegetable oils mostly unsaturated one (sesame oil, primrose oil, grape seed oil, soy bean oil etc.).
- Eggs are rich sources of proteins. Beat two egg yolks and add into a glass of hot water. Strain this preparation. Soak hair and scalp in this solution for an hour. Rinse it off with warm water.
