Lumps on Scalp Treatments
Lumps on the scalp can be quite scary. They feel so itchy, and although you fight the urge to scratch it, you still do and then suddenly you cut it loose.
- You might ask yourself what these lumps on your scalp are. This outbreak is what is called seborrheic dermatitis. Seborrheic dermatitis crops up mainly in the scalp but it could also appear in other parts of the body such as the face, back, upper chest, and in other oily areas. In infants, it is known as the cradle cap.
- It excretes fluid profusely. When this fluid dries up, it forms the lumps on the scalp, the lumps that could sometimes scare the wits out of you.
Lumps on Scalp Causes
Seborrheic dermatitis is not an infectious disease, although the lumps can get infected when not given proper care. Hence it is best to know when you already have it, here are the signs and symptoms:
- Patches of thick crust that forms as a lump on your scalp
- Itchy scalp, which sometimes becomes sore and could be painful when touched
- Dandruff or skin flakes
- Red small bumps on your scalp
- Shiny red and oily scalp that has small white or yellowish scales
- Small white scales that attach to your hair shaft
Home Treatment for Lumps on Scalp
While seborrheic dermatitis is not harmful, it can be uncomfortable and most people find it disgusting.
- The primary treatment is the use of a medicated shampoo. You can buy it as an over-the-counter medicine and should contain ingredients to treat lumps such as ketoconazole, tar, ciclopirox, salicylic acid, selenium sulfide, or zinc pyrithione.
- Use the shampoo daily until you feel that the symptoms have been controlled. You can then cut it back to using it twice or thrice a week. You should let the shampoo stay for three to five minutes to allow time for the ingredients to work on the scalp.
- Another home treatment is apple cider vinegar applied to the scalp after you shampoo. Thoroughly rinse off the apple cider vinegar after leaving it for 10 to 15 minutes. This helps moisturize your scalp. Drinking lots of water will also help moisturize the scalp.

I have a lump on my scalp that is more a light brown color. I have tried Nizoral shampoo, Neutragena T/Sal Therapeutic shampoo, apple cider vinegar rinse. Doesn’t seem to help. Also, I applied tea tree oil with a Qtip and it has got a little bigger, but nothing major yet. Will this finally heal? It is not noticeable at this time but my question is, will it disappear? It started out a few years ago very small and has grown larger but not that badly.
Once in awhile it will itch and I try not to hit it with a comb and brush.
